Hey everyone

Bit of a random post, but since we all see them i want to see what adverts other people really stand out to them? Do adverts really work and change what you think?

Heres one which has caught my eye recently - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIQbrsKuh18

Don't be daft, Spencer, he is some ad designer/market researcher who wants a critique on his work! (Or a good idea for some work :lol.)

I remember that Maxwell House had a fairly catchy tune in the late 80s with slogan " Get the Max! " that stuck in my head for ages ( and is probably still there now! )

Way way back in my childhood, I remember the little blue Salt n Shank bag had a face and sang a song like " salt n shake just shake it ", but you'll need somebody older than me ( 33 ) to expand on that one.

Never made me want to buy these products though!

I tend to miss adverts because I Sky+ most things I watch, but if I'm on t'internet I tend to leave the TV on so I do get to see/hear some of them.

The latest McDonalds one with the people planting things to the accompaniment of a whistled tune is most annoying. It sticks in my head and I find myself whistling it subconsciously in the shower Evil or Very Mad It doesn't tempt me to visit a McDs though. So ha!

Most advertising agencies are getting wise to PVRs and trying to make their wares attractive enough to catch the eye even at x30 speed. The theory is that fast-forwarding through the adverts requires greater concentration on the screen because the viewer doesn't want to miss the programme starting again. This has increased the value of programme sponsorships, because the the viewer knows that is the start of the programme. This has led me to stopping midway through the ad-breaks on some channels simply because they show an ordinary advert which looks the same as a main sponsor sting from a different channel - at which point I feel cheated!

Recent Honda adverts have always been eye-catching and always worth the effort. The one involving various car-parts having a domino effect on each other, was a stroke of genius.

On a naffer level, Churchill adverts never cease to amuse me. Why a nodding bulldog saying "aaaw yes" tickles me (and others), is beyond the realms of psychological reasoning and explanation.

Sometimes it's about what catches the eye, but sometimes it's more about what catches the ear. And sometimes it's a successful mix of both of those!

A selection of ads I can recall from various years (exact dates unknown) that didn't necessarily make me go 'wow', but are for their own reasons memorable -- in no order:

  • Hamlet Cigars (Channel 4 spoof)
  • Carlsberg [Various campaigns]
  • Fry's Turkish Delight [memorable yet also somewhat haunting]
  • Scotch Videotape (Skeleton)
  • Strongbow (Arrows) [Various campaigns]
  • Yellow Pages [Various - circa 1990s?]
  • Lunn Poly ('Get Away!')
  • Levi's (501 Taxi; Twisty Limbs; Freedom To Move)
  • Audi RS6 (Bull)
  • Reebok (Lose The Beer Belly)
  • Expedia (Cloud)
  • Nissan Qashqai (Skateboarder)
  • Ford Mondeo (Balloons)

Might be more, but right now that's all I can think of from memory.

Adverts about television,( and I used adverts instead of promotion in that they were run on ITV ) , that have stuck in my head are :

tvam's " Hey, hey, hey you're on your way to a great new day "
and ITV's " Don't Go Changing " and " Get Ready for ITV ".

All of which must be ( nearly ) 20 years ago, and so are effective. Either that or my head's just full of mince Smile

It's not eye catching, but on the subject of adverts, am I the only one who is becoming more and more irritated by that ruddy DFS Rockstar advert?

You're not the only one - it's godawful. A commercial that is unknowingly grating on my nerves is not a good thing.

If they haven't got plans to take it off the air soon, I say we sue them on the grounds of damages to mental health! Wink
