In case anyone is interested here's a list of TV-AM's opponents for the licence:

Considering it too 5-6 years for TVam to launch were the services by Yorkshire and Tyne Tees actually deemed successful?

There's a piece about it in Morning Glory, where it is made clear that Yorkshire didn't really believe in, didn't put resources behind it and clearly didn't think it through. For example it went out at 8:30, when most people had already left their homes for the day. No surprise, it failed miserably.

Those few sentences are good illustration of what an entertaining read that book is:

"In all, eight groups ended up applying for the franchise, and hours had clearly gone into dreaming up imaginative, memorable names. Lining up alongside TV-am were AM-TV, AMT, Daybreak TV, Daytime TV, Morning TV and Good Morning TV. Proposals ranged from the hugely ambitious to the downright far-fetched."

The morning trials were not successful, as far as I am aware.

You've probably used up all your preview pages for that book, which means you can't read more of it. If you only want a portion of a book, it's best not to scroll through it too much, as that'll use up your preview pages. The idea is that you have to purchase the book if you want to read all of it.

There's a copy on Amazon that you can buy for £17, of just £2.55 if you have a Kindle device.

If TV-am had went bust in 1984, wouldn't it have been easier to get ITN to make a show to fill at least some of that slot, say 07:30-09:25, until the IBA could reaward the franchise? One issue that would come out would then be advertising revenue. Would ITN get it all, or would the regional ITV companies sell the space themselves?

The issue was that nobody was watching - why would a standby service have been necessary?

Bearing in mind in the mornings at that point ITV showed schools programmes I can't really imagine what they would have filled the airtime with, if anything.

Cartoons and other children's programming? Many commercial TV stations in other countries without their own morning shows did just that. Cartoons tend to be popular and inexpensive to acquire.
