Trouble at Vintage TV?

Pulled from Freeview, Freesat, and temporarily Sky and Virgin (August 2018)

This site closed in March 2021 and is now a read-only archive

I discovered Vintage TV on Freeview about a year to eighteen months ago. The show Needle Time with Neil McCormack proved really interesting. Just discovered it has gone from Freeview 82 with a message saying "This service is currently unavailable" in a black screen. A shame.

But with the vanishing of Vintage TV from Freeview 82 I just scanned along and came to Freeview 88 and a channel that seems to have popped up recently, as I've not noticed it before - Now 80's, with the Now albums branded logo in the corner. What show is on? The Golden Hour with Simon Bates, playing 1980. I'll certainly give it a go.

Now 80s is interesting. They seem to be attempting to make a TV version of the ‘1FM’ era of Radio 1. Simon Bates, with both Our Tune and Golden Hour, Bruno Brookes, Mark Goodier, Pat Sharp*, and resung Radio 1 jingles.

*I know he wasn't on Radio 1 for long, but still.
DE88 and London Lite gave kudos

Vintage TV's Facebook page is still posting regular updates about upcoming programmes, based on the tv schedule, including broadcast times, which are getting angry responses from some viewers. The most recent of these was at 11am today.

All of their posts are added either on the hour or half past, so maybe they're automatically generated posts which haven't been turned off yet.

.... which also lends credence to the theory this “planned” downtime is anything but planned.... otherwise they’d have stopped these in advance.

Are they responding to any tweets?

They were earlier today, but none after lunchtime...

The automated tweets etc still seem to be going out.

More news... like they won't be coming back.

The "live" online stream seems to be anything but live.

According to the listings, it should currently be showing "Tune in to 1985", but is currently showing music videos from various years.

A promo has also just been shown for Neil McCormick's Needle Time: Kevin Rowland, which stated it was on tonight at 10:30pm. According to the schedule, this was due to be shown yesterday at 10:30pm.

The online stream also doesn't appear to be showing any adverts.

Doesn't mean it's not live, just that the whole schedule's in disarray.

Vintage TV previously announced that they were planning to return to Sky by the end of August. They then announced last week that they have agreed a new deal to return to Sky, with the date to be confirmed. It's still going to be an SD channel, but there's no news on whether it will continue to be a free channel, but given that it's available online, I'm assuming it will be.

They've said they're still in talks with Virgin, and have no plans to return to Freeview or Freesat.
