They could slim down the news room.

Look at STV and what they can do with the budgets and staff they have, why can't the beeb do they same.

Only difference is the beeb will have BBC Radio Scotland output.

STV has three main evening news programmes, BBC Scotland has one. STV will have a new nightly news programme, BBC Scotland has Newsnight Scotland.

Too many people at the Beeb News & Sport do F All IMO! Its about time the cut's happened! Its just like 2005 when STV made the cuts, 6 years too late IMO at the Beeb!

I can honestly see big names going! Jackie B or Sally M will go with the other having to do 5 nights for the same salary they are getting just now!

Or one will stay on Reporting Scotland five nights and the other will move to Newsnight Scotland 4 nights aweek.

Reporting Scotland Breakfast Presenter will stay on and do the Lunchtime news, with Jackie or Sally doing the late news.

Lots of thing to consider, I actually think that's why Atholl Duncan left the Beeb last year, as he knew this day was coming.

Even back in the good old days STV news was on a budget, and still managed to out smart bbc.

A Lot of BBC Scotland programmes are not tartan crap, but are decent, like the comedy's, docs and current affairs. I do seem what you are getting at "Sands" being honset Rab was local programmes that then transferred to the network, Im sure that how most of the Scottish programmes made it into the network, ( Not sure how Naked video and A kick up the 80s ) got way with it. Catchword started life as Scottish show then become a network one.

Its been ten years now since STV made big cuts to its local productions, and its never been able to catch back up, and all of its networks shows have also gone to the bins, I Just don't want BBC Scotland to go the same way. ( I will agree the SCHEME may well be tartan crap)

Thing is though, Jackie Bird is freelance and writes for radio scotland, does children in need and is the face of rep scot. And newsnight Scotland seems to be using reporters rather than Gordon brewer at moment

In your opinion, so not based on facts!

These are not the first cuts! I worked at the BBC around that time and every year there were cuts and job losses - 2004, 2005, 2006 and they've probably been happening every year since. One of the big problems is that those who take redundancy are the longest serving and therefore most experienced. The resulting decline in quality in some parts of news is very obvious to all

To say that there are people in news and sport that do nothing isn't really true either. In my experience most of them are very busy indeed, and I speak as someone who worked in a BBC newsroom for 5 years with ever diminishing staff numbers and ever increasing demands.... there was very little dead wood.

Of course you will get quiet and busy periods so you might have crew or producers doing nothing at times, but to have no slack in the quiet times means you can't react to the busy times.

It is my opinion and respect where your coming from.

But in reality the BBC Newsroom prob gets 3 times the budget that STV has but STV does ten times more.

They produce 3 evening news programmes, they have excellent online news service and are moving into a 4th daily news programme.

The BBC have one evening news programme and newsnight. The BBC website isn't all that great! And to make matters worse Reporting Scotland is total rubbish, it ranks as one of the BBC's lowest % regional news programmes.

If they do get rid of the experience then so what! Fresher people will gladly take there job, that's what happened to STV and now it reflects its target audience, BBC Scotland does not!

I have to ask why on earth was there no countdown to the bells? That is pretty poor, cutback can't be that bad. I'm surprised scocth and wry was not dumped on to the line up.
