I suppose all the archive clips were cropped because half of the show appeared to made up of performances from the recent TOTP Christmas specials as well as three new videos shot in 16:9, and they probably didn't have time/budget/inclination to add pillars to achieve a compromise for us crop-haters.

I wasn't happy with the cropping either. I stopped watching after 5 mins. Very dissapointing.

I registered my disgust on twitter when it started! It's the norm! I'd prefer to see it stretched to fill 16:9 rather than cropped - that is how I watch old stuff on my TV anyway. (awaits backlash)

Not that such a thing would ever make it to air - an instant QC/Tech review fail... although I did notice a lot of it in the Eddie Izzard documentary film the other day, however that was bought in.
