Although I agree on the BBC3 issue, the BBCi websites are invaluable. BBC News is certainly far superior to any other news website I've found, while the new local websites provide a good service.

Most would agree that the BBCi website is very good and is one of the most popular in the country. Absolutely no point to closing it down.
And BBC News Online... nuff said, unbeatable.
It's a joke, can't you see. If you read it again carefully you'll see that he doesn't mean it.
The key phrase I believe is the one I've highlighted below in a nice shade of tory blue...
Quote:
The Conservative party would switch off a swath of the BBC's digital services, including its website and the youth channel BBC3,
if it won the next general election
.
It's just like me saying...
Quote:
I'd start watching itv and really enjoy it,
if pigs could fly
.
Does anyone listen to these people any more? For God's sake, he can't see the point in a public service website - well if that's the case he can't see the point in public service! Of course a member of today's tory party not understanding the point of serving the public shouldn't really surprise me.
BBC Online is one of - if not
the
- most used website in the UK. It's the one that I, and lots of people I work with and know, click on to find out most things.
I agree with others that BBC3 needs to be looked into, maybe it isn't performing well, but BBCi is absolutely invaluable, in terms of news, sport, education, listening to radio, local sites and much, much more.
I have a feeling the tories who came out with this are probably 70 year olds who never use the internet and usually go on about arts programming being increased.
In opposition to Square Eyes, another reason (and there are many) not to vote Tory.
If they did shut down BBC 3 I would be the first to shake their hand. As for getting rid of BBCi well that’s them talking out of their Bottom. If the BBC Website goes, the whole BBC may as well just go, and show us the test card all day on every channel (or maybe make an exception and show us the CBBC where’s your head at promo!!..…....no second thoughts, the Testcard is better!). I know that would excite some people.
But why is it for the BBC to produce a "public service" website funded by the tax payer in this country for use on the world wide web ? Does it say in the charter that they must provide this service ?
What areas of media do the BBC want to get into next ? Perhaps a free sheet newspaper distributed throughout the world funded by the British taxpayer ?

No-one is saying that they HAVE to, the point is that they do and they do it very well - I know that it has served me very well indeed throughout my A-Levels. The fact that those around the world can use it is merely a reflection of type of medium provided by the world wide web - it is the fact that those in this country can use it that is important.
Don't forget too that the worldwide access provides a service to licence fee payers from this country abroad on business or holidays, rather like World Service TV or Radio.
Its all fairly meaningless. They have also said (frequently) that they would abolish the license fee if they were in government, rather prempting the usual charter renewal/review process - and yet they then say the BBC should be under the control of OFCOM.
You can't have it both ways - either you pass full control to a media regulator with a reasonable number of teeth and then shut-up (which personally I think both the tories and Labour ought to do, particularly on issues like analogue switchoff) or you meddle around with things and speak your mind in public, not both.

The most used "content" website in the UK (only search engines are ranked higher)
... I would also point out, largely responsible for some of the uptake of internet in the UK too.
Interesting cross-section of views, though Nice to see BBCi has largely come out unscathed here!!!

yes, but bbci west is another kettle of fish all together - in fact i'd describe it as a monstrous lump which has been built on the edge of the world wide web to make the place look untidy.
