There was an episode of Friends in January 1999 that got 2.41 million, though I imagine Torchwood's rating will be higher than that once the final ratings were taken into account.
Very positive ratings,anyway.
An episode of Friends shown on 13/01/2000 on Sky 1 got 2.86 million then a week later got 2.25 million, another week later got 2.15 million.

BBC3's Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood launched with 2.4 million viewers last night - believed to be the biggest ever multichannel audience for a UK-originated, non-sports programme.
The heavily promoted BBC3 drama, about a bunch of alien hunters in Cardiff, is thought to be second only to an episode of Friends, broadcast on Sky One six years ago, which attracted 2.8 million viewers.

These were before 2001 (someone might be able to correct me if that is the wrong year) when a different system was used to gather ratings data. BARB say that due to this, comparisons between a programme before this date and a programme afterwards can be misleading.

Was trying to picture Gwen all night....then realised - she appeared in the Charles Dickens episode of Doctor Who - the Unquiet Dead, also in Cardiff, also called Gwen - albeit a servant for Mr Sneed the undertaker. However she was pre-cognitave and died, so unless some major sci-fi deus ex machina occurs, I don't know how the two could be related.
And of course Hoshi Sato tended to the pig-robot in Aliens of London too.

I thought that was precisely the reason she was chosen, to have that link with Doctor Who...?

Gwyneth.
Yeah, that'll never happen
I think it's Toshiko Sato - you're confusing her with a character from Enterprise

I'm not totally au fais with the technology, but as far as I'm aware, Torchwood is made in HD. Therefore I suspect it is being shot in the framerate we are seeing it in, rather than there being any post-production to create a "film" effect.
Having said that I did also notice some sections where the motion looked decidedly odd - I just assumed this was part of the down-conversion from HD to standard-def. I hope it was an error though - it wouldn't be good if all HD down-conversions end up looking like that, subtle though it was.

The blurriness of the "filmic" effect. As much as some people hate it in general, it's something they've more or less got right
in Doctor Who. To be honest, it looked awful. IMHO, if producers want to add the "filmic" effect, especially for high profile,
heavily promoted programs such as this, either do it right, or don't bother doing it at all!

There was one bit inparticular in the first episode i think it was. It was the part where the woman has the gun pointed at Gwyn and Captain Jack is coming up in the invisible lift. The water is flowing behind him. It looks as though that bit had either been sped up, or didn't have the filmic effect applied to it and so was just interlaced HD video, i couldn't be sure. It looked very odd!
The motion otherwise was fine on my telebox..

Torchwood looks excellent in HD - really stunning.
I think that, if there is a problem with SD, it must be something to do with the downscaling.

EPISODE 4: "Cyberwomen" by Chris Chibnall
There's a dark secret in the basement of the Hub. Even Jack is unaware of it, but Ianto knows. And he'll go to any lengths, sacrifice anything and anyone, to protect what's down there.
