TOTP2 was a better show IMO when Johnnie Walker presented (and dare I say it, Stuart Maconie wrote the scripts), but I doubt that Walker would become the regular host again.

I have always thought it would be a good idea to use a presenter rota on TOTP2 similar to TOTP - but instead of using mainly Radio 1 DJs, get the mainstream Radio 2 DJs to narrate, or perhaps present in-vision.

I am thinking along the lines of Mark Radcliffe, Janice Long, Simon Mayo (I think his Album Chart Show duties make him eligible), Ken Bruce etc. Just to appease his few fans, I would still include Steve Wright among the presenter rota. Also, when he is covering for an absent Radio 2 presenter, Mark Goodier.

That's a good idea! Janice Long would be good, deffo. Ken Bruce as well? Terry Wogan could put some of his Eurovision wit to good use Wink

I read then that TOTP2 helped BBC2 to it's lowest Saturday audience share in about 5 years this weekend!

They should have just called the new show TOTP now that the original one is gone. Why call it TOTP2 when there's no other TOTP that it could be confused with?

Indeed

But calling it just TOTP would be confusing because that title's traditionally associated with a show that concentrates on just current hits. So something like "Vintage TOTP" would probably be better.

The "Sounds of the 60s/70s/80s" format of the early 1990s was better because it would plunder any vintage BBC programme featuring "live" (albeit sometimes mimed) music performances - e.g. The Old Grey Whistle Test, etc - rather than only TOTP.

Also a "TOTP"-less title might be better now too. It must be confusing to any "average viewers" who were aware than "normal" TOTP had it's "last ever" show only a little while ago, that now the TOTP brand has "come back" so soon. Perhaps the "TOTP" should live on - if at all - in a much more "occasional" way (e.g. 25th Dec special, special gigs like the RHCP one thay did earlier this year, etc)

Has the show always been widescreen? Everything tonight was certainly cropped to 16:9 giving a soft look on some of the videos. Aside from that, everything else pretty much the same - Steve, the sarcasm, the captions...

No, all previous series were in 4:3.

To drag up this fairly old thread, it was back in 4:3 this evening.

I think it switched back to 4:3 last week.

I saw TOTP2 for the first time this series last night; and it's as bad as where it left off - Wright at his most irritating and egotistical, another claim that he presented an edition of TOTP which he didn't - he must have forgot he introduced a different Tourists song ("So Good To Be Back Home Again") instead of their version of "I Only Wanna Be With You" (cf. the end of Thames).

And predictably enough, Eva Cassidy at the end, although it was played in tribute to the late Paul Walters.

I don't like the caption boards on the new TOTP2. Can't see them very well.

At least Steve Sh*te isn't as sycophantic and air-headed on TOTP2 as he is on his R2 show. It would have been better to get a new presenter in for the "revamped" current run-- Janice Long or Mark Radcliffe perhaps.

I've watched all the TOTP2 in this series so far... while I'm glad it's back, can we have some different clips please Rolling Eyes . Most of the archive clips shown, were shown on TOTP2 in 2003!! It's a good idea to include present day performances though, keeps "TOTP1" going in a sense

I've got a load of previous TOTP2 epis on tape still from circa 2003, and the performances used are pretty much the same as the ones now Laughing Steve must be more air-headed than I realised Wink

I think one of the reasons it was called TOTP2 is because it's always been on BBC2? Confused
