I suppose these repeats do show up the TOTP 2 selections really.
For example, I had no knowledge of both Mud & The Rubettes change of direction, plus songs I'd never heard of (City Boy - Hapkido Kid from 1976, their most famous hit being a couple of years later, 5705!), songs I'd forgotten about, (Cliff Richard's I Can't Ask For Anymore Than You !)
One surprise was them showing that padeo Glitter at half 7 of the evening, when you wouldve expected it to be edited out, like Jonathan King was, thanks to the Daily Heil !
Oh & not forgeting BBC Four's infamous policy of cutting 5 or 10 mins out of a show, to fit it into a 730 slot, while running it mostly uncut late at night!

I found this new format a bit strange, and it seems to cut the songs!

I'll summarise what I've found online, re BBC Four & TOTP.
The 730pm Thursday showing is edited, irrespective of original duration, down to a 30 min slot.(With a mixture of complete songs being taken out & others being edited down from their original length!)
There is also late night showings on Thursday & Saturday, to the original duration, be it 35 or 40 mins.
Originally all showings were 30 minutes, causing some songs/performances to not get a repeat on BBC Four, but after pressure on BBC Four bosses, the late night showings became the original durations, with one exception, the studio performance of 100 Ton And A Feather performing 'It Only Takes A Miracle' from 15/7/1976 was not shown as '100 Ton And A Feather' was Jonathan King, the reason being, well Google it, if you don't know.
This caused a complaint to the BBC by Mr King, which was picked up by the Daily Mail, & the Beeb basically replied, 'Well we won't do it again'! (Said performance is available on You Tube, if you're remotely interested!)
This then caused some speculation whether Gary Glitter's appearances on 20/1 & 3/2/1977 would be repeated.
In the end, the 20/1 appearance was relagated to the late night showings, while 3/2/1977 suprisingly appeared on the 730pm showing(causing other acts to be relagated to the late showings!) as this was the 2nd act on the show & presumbly difficult to be edited out, without looking too silly.
Originally the plan was to show each edition in the same week as they would have been shown in 1976 onwards, but as the Beeb don't have all the editions from 1976 & 1977, it was decided to place a screening of 'The Sky At Night' one week each month, to cover, which meant everything went out of sync pretty quickly.
1977 fares better as only 4 editions were missing, but former presenter David Hamilton had supplied to the Beeb, via Kalediscope, off air recordings of most of his editions from 1976 & 1977(but the 1976 shows he supplied predated the start of the repeats, so those were not repeated(The only Hamilton 1976 show not supplied was from September 1976, which features Hamilton apparantly under an influence, causing him to refer to the Rod Stewart song, 'The Killing Of Georgie' as 'The Killing Of Georgie Fame'! Whether Hamilton has this show or not, has not been proved!))
The 1977 Hamilton show returned is 31/3/1977, but the Beeb have not scheduled that in yet, as next week is 'Sky At Night' week, but unless the Beeb have a change of heart, it's not looking likely, for the week after.
The other missing shows from 1977 are 3/3, 4/8(presenter Jimmy Saville) & 8/9/1977(presenter David 'Kid' Jensen), but the situation re the 'Sky At Night' has not been resolved yet!
Hopefully that post has made things clearer(but I'm sure the TOTP experts will correct me, if I'm wrong!)

Indeed, but as far as TOTP2 goes, the reference I assume is to the Bananarama clip on the TOTP2 repeat yesterday, which was cut particularly short because the original clip featured end credits over half of it.

According to next week's Radio Times, out today, BBC Four TOTP next week is the edition originally transmitted 5/4/1977, so missing out 31/3/1977.
Wonder if David Hamilton is wondering why he bothered returning those TOTP off airs, if they ain't gonna use them?
Does the Beeb have a quality standard for transmission?
