The black Stig was Perry McCarthy, an ex-F1 driver. I'm not sure if he was sacked but rather moved on, and his identity wasn't half as closely guarded as the current Stig(s).

I notice on tonight's 'Best of' edition they've gone for a big 'Censored' and pixelation , mainly over when James has his smoking pipe (presumably lit).

oh great. That pixellation will look really great when that gets repeated on Dave. The edition from the current series that was on earlier looked appalling.
