Well the new series of Top Gear has begun.
A few references to the TV deception stuff, with them starting the show by making Hammond look tall by standing on a box. Also quite a bit of suggest that Fifth Gear was responsible for the fire at its warehouse.

I didn't even know that their props warehouse had even burnt down until Jez said at the beginning, although I wouldn't be surprised if it was Fifth Gear. Laughing

Really enjoying this tonight, okay there's nothing really new about this series, but it's been enjoyable, loved the film to find the best road too.

I'd just like to say wow. The photography on those mountain shots was just mindblowing. Fantastic television.

I absolutely agree with that - truly spectacular.

I don't suppose it's simulcast on HD yet? It'd be perfect with shots like that.

I thought some (all) of the first half of the big trip looked very DV to me, what was with the cropping too?

At first I thought the cropping / cinematic aspect ratio was to cover up Richard's minicam not working perfectly but it could just have been an artistic decision, it worked particularly well on the helicopter shots.

There are quite a few potential problems with HD, the minicams would look horrible even when working and the studio would need a major upgrade.

The studio is effectively an OB, done from an OB scanner (this used to be supplied by 021 not sure if it still is) so all it would take is just a diffrent set of kit to be rigged up next time.

I suspect the use of small cameras in cars/boats is the problem with them making an HD version. There is a limit to how much SD content you can have in a programme and still class it as HD... and HDV (the HD version of DV whcih is what they'd use for such shots) is classed as SD content

Does anyone know what the song was at the film inthe search for the best road? A rock song that is also currently used on the Spooks trail on BBC 1? Confused

I was thinking the studio itself would need a facelift tho, it may show up as just a hanger in HD plus the lighting would probably need boosted significantly to produce a sharp image. Then there's the question of whether anyone would actually like to see a MCU of Clarkson in HD.
