its a shame fewer viewers watch it now

There's absolutely nothing unusual in that. The relative popularity of Corrie and EastEnders runs in a cycle - Corrie will have a strong storyline for a while so it'll consistently outrate EE, then the positions will be reversed for a few months, and so on.

Either way, there's usually very little difference between the audiences for both shows (except during major storyline peaks) and they can both be relied upon to pull over 11 million viewers per episode.

however I think ITV would be reluctant to axe Corrie

Jez, that is quite the most bizarre comment I've ever read on this very bizarre forum! Confused

ITV would no more consider axing Corrie than the BBC would consider axing EastEnders. Why would ITV get rid of the single most popular programme on British television?

But what if in a few years ratings are down to about 5-7 million with other shows such as Emmerdale beating it regularly? Realistically I dont think they will axe it, im just saying a lot of people i know arnt enjoying the show anymore, they are unhappy about storylines since last March (when Richard left) and the show has lost quite a few million. Pesonally I myself am enjoying it just as much as before Richard left.

It always makes me laugh when somebody says, "Many people aren't watching it anymore", I mean on what basis are they coming to this conclusion ? Jez, you probably know a handful of people who have expressed this opinion to you, hardly representative of the audience as a whole.

The Richard Hillman stloryline was an extreme case, it brought many new viewers to the soap. But since he left, Corrie has still been doing very nicely, as has been said, always regularly 11-14m. When you consider where it was a few years back, Corrie is very buouyant at the moment.

Square Eyes I know for a fact many long term fans of the show are now turning off, many Corrie message board's I visit and people are saying they hate what Kieran Roberts has done to the show, and how Kate Ford is an appalling actress who is making people turn off.

The viewing figures speak for themselves, it regularly got 15 million a year ago, now its down to about 10-11 million and one episode in December only got 8.9 million.

Well call me an old cynic, but I suspect that anyone who takes the time to discuss the show on a Corrie message board is probably telling porkie pies if they say they 'don't watch it anymore'.

Gavin - I do watch Corrie, I dont have any issues with it myself, im just telling people here that I know a lot of fans have issues with the show now, not all of them have switched off but some people are on the verge of it and its mainly because they think Kate Ford is ruining it.

A bit of an inaccurate list really, throwing one off programmes in a rating couple with the highest single recorded rating of other programmes which are on multiple time.

One single episode got 19m or whatever it was, and on the basis of that Corrie is listed as the most popular programme of 2003? What about the 200 odd other episodes they made last year?

Fair point. The alternatives, though, are to average the soaps' audience figures out and leave them with lower figures, or include all the episodes (most accurate way) in which case the entire top 100 would be wall-to-wall soap operas.

The list does show the decline of the mass-market programme however -- the 20th most popular programme getting 10 million viewers.

That is far more reflective of the general decline in viewership of the major terrestrial channels (thanks to the increasing penetration of multichannel) than it is of any great public abandonment of Corrie specifically. You'll note that EastEnders is also down on what it was typically getting a year ago.

You still cannot ignore the bare fact that overall, Corrie is still the single most popular programme on British television and there is absolutely no reason to suppose that there is going to be a sudden, catastrophic drop in viewers.

And bear in mind that in a few years, when even more people have multichannel, 5-7 million could well be just as good an audience figure as 11-14 million is today.

I don't see the problem. More people watched that episode of Corrie than any other television programme last year - therefore Corrie was the most popular programme. If you add up the figures across the year, you'll still find that Corrie outrated EastEnders over the full 12 months.

Out of interest, would you still have complained if the #1 programme *hadn't* been from ITV? Wink

Yes that is true, Ive just been concerned as Corrie is my fave tv show and id be gutted if it was axed. I know its just a tv show but its important to me.

In the Daily Star today they hinted that EE are set to win most of the gongs at the first Soap Awards this year (The "All About Soap" ones. I cant face Depression Enders winning gong after gong this year, Corrie need to do something fast to get back on top.

Jez, I can assure you that you are the only person in the universe who is even contemplating the possibility of Corrie being axed. ITV certainly isn't.

Who gives a toss about meaningless awards ceremonies that are usually all about internal industry politics anyway? It's viewing figures that count.
