I don't see the point in this - it's as pointless as the Scottish Six idea.
It may be pointless if you dont mind an international news service on all the major channels that lean heavily towards England and English bias.
A scottish news service would combine international, national UK stories and Scotland stories together.
Remember we have our own government now also so there would be a good cause for this.
Take Sky for example - all the reporters at Sky would be used on the Scottish service but it would be edited in Scotland - so say the major story in England could be different to the one in Scotland.
As I said it will never change and as a Scot I will have to grow to like it!!
The fact of the matter is, despite devolution, the major administrative, political and economic decisions are taken in Westminster, in England.
The capital city of the UK is London, in England.
Most of the media organisations are based in London... in England.
I don't think that on anything other than stories about football teams there is any real justification for a dedicated "international" Scottish news service.
murdoch ought to be ashamed of himself - if he carries on, ignoring the plight of his scottish audience, people might get the impression that hes running a business and not a charity.
scotland is a fairly minor principality in the global scheme of things. doubling the cost of his already established and successful uk news service, the impact of which would only be enjoyed by a potential audience of a few million .... is .... well a silly idea.
he'd be better off starting up a "sky news greater london" - with a massive potential audience fairly close together, but even then, its a pointless exercise.
i'm certainly not on the edge of my seat over this england football *scandal* - but im sure alot of people are in england, and seeing as the population of england MASSIVELY out numbers the popns of the principalities - then it seems a legitimate story to cover.

I can not see how it would double his costs - the same reporters would be used for the Scotland service as is used for the English - the only cost would be studios, presenters and a small reporting team.
The difference between Greater London and Scotland is that the latter is a NATION!
At the end of the day, Sky is run as a business.....to make money. End of story.
Sky thought it was worth running the "Sky Scottish" strand a few years back, and it failed to attract sufficient audiences to justify its airtime. It may have shown re-runs of Scotland Tonight, but it was intended as a service for "ex pats" living in England, who were unable to receive their fix of local Scottish news from elsewhere on TV.
If Scotland wants its own news channel then surely Grampian TV would be the most likely candidate for you to badger into providing the service ?! All they have to do is pay for the transponder space at 28E, and massively extend the local bulletins and away they go.......but rest assured if the venture failed to attract sufficent audience share it will go much the same way as Sky Scottish.....!
Yes - why should Sky News, essentially an English service, provide a channel for Scotland? Why can't a Scottish company? I think I'll complain to TV5, as their channel is to French for my liking - I DEMAND they make an English service.
And on a similar note, how about abolishing tuition fees here in England? I don't hear you complaining about the injustice there.
Sky News Greater London would make hugely more sense, and certainly such services have been around in the US for years. WJLA - ABC7 Washington, DC - operate News8, a 24 hour news channel for Washington. News12 Long Island (the original) is another example.
Not that it'll ever happen over here, though. Different broadcasting culture.
I'm afraid that whilst London may just be a city, it produces significantly more newsworthy stories each day than the entire nation of Scotland. That's not coming from the mouth of someone socialised into that sort of attitude... it's just fact.
It would more than double of costs of the present operation, regardless of how many of the existing Sky News Scotland reporters are used. Studio facilities, editors, technicians, equipiment... that would vastly increase costs, and the audience and the politics couldn't justify that sort of spending.

It is a UK service, rather than English one. Certainly their call centres are based in Scotland, but that has more to do with labour costs and a friendly nature (honest).
I don't think any special programming provision is necessary. There are barely enough stories to fill a 2 hour news programme, never mind a rolling channel.
And of course you are quite right about tuition fees phil. I can only suggest you take it up with your MP.

Thank you Phill you have just made my point even clearer.
Sky news is essentially a service for the UNITED KINGDOM not just England like you and many more of you think including the people that control our major broadcasters.
You and people like you are the very reason I started this thread - there is more to the UK than England - you should remember that!
