Very true. The great irony of the character was that the bigots loved him, and the PC brigade hated him. Johnny Speight dedicated his life to railing against racism and bigotry.

Absolutely. I remember Speight being interviewed and commenting that he was approached in some café by an ancient east londoner and told "I love your show, especially the things you say about the coons". Speight replied that the point was to laugh at ignorant racist ******* like him.

I'm very surprised that the 'Liberals' on here havent pounced on this thread and accused us (ie those involved in intelligent discussion) of being racist.

Are you Rush Limbarh?

Surely it's only American shock jocks and Fox News who use the word Liberal in that context?

Yes I think thats true - with some of the comedies on the list it is surprising how the Vicar of Dibley came up so high - with the un-politically correct ones pushed down the list - such as the splendind It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

But it's not a case of being PC or non-PC, it's a case of how well they've aged. Like it or not attitudes have changed over the years. This isn't something done by any 'PC movement', it's just we live in more enlightened and educated times.

It isn't political correctness it's just the percieved values of the day.

Also some comedies and dramas don't age well and don't stand up to repeat viewing. Some just are dated in terms of how they look or in terms of the humour, Others just look very poor due to the differing production values then, IAHHM being a good example.

Though for some reason I noticed they edit Bullseye! I don't know if it is because of time, an out of date news event or something to do with ITV.

Incidentally, are they showing a wider selection of Bullseye now? It ran from 1981 to the mid-90's, but every episode I've seen on Granada Plus over the last 5 years or so has been from the 1989, 1990 and 1991 series. Do they have any more?

From the episodes on Plus, those are the only years that they seem to have, they've been showing 1991 episodes these past two weeks. They were showing 1993 episodes not too long ago, when it moved to Saturday when it was on ITV. I remember that UK Gold used to show them, but they had episodes from the 80's, I have some of one from 1985 on video when it was on Gold. Though if you look on Plus' website a lot of people have asked if they have or if they will show the ATV episodes of Bullseye.

I'll still watch programmes like that though, because they can be very funny. Who cares if they're badly produced by modern standards?

Even the like of Fawlty Towers looks a bit shoddy on occasion.

I must say as well, surely one of the points of Liberalism is that people have complete freedom of speech? This is an area where I take issue with some Americans; theirs is in many ways one of the most "liberal" nations on Earth; yet they use the word liberal as a term of abuse. Why?

I've always thought that one of the best ways of fighting intolerance is to make a joke of it, hopefully making the bigots realise how stupid they are. Political Correctness has put paid to that, unfortunately.

Racists - I can't believe you said "Indian", "Jews" or "Curry".

I don't know why the Guardian brigade can't just lay off programmes such as these - they are far funnier than the carp that the BBC is currently spewing out. Notice nobody complains about David Brent's overenthusiastic desperation to please all races, creeds and colours, which does more annoyance than most "racist" remarks in comedy shows.

Jim Davidson constantly appeals that just because he uses racist humour in his act, it doesn't mean that he hates the people the jokes are aimed at .. if that were the case he'd "walk out my door every morning and simply say 'right .. f**k everybody, i'm going back inside'". By making a joke aimed at certain groups/creeds/religions/races/sexualities/genders/species, you are not necessarily showing hatred towards that group!

As Billy Connolly says, white heterosexual males are the only group you can poke fun at nowadays "without there being a protest march the next morning". "You can even wish rape on them - 'I hope you go to prison and some 300lb flathead f**ks you up the arse' ... try saying that to a woman!!"

Can't people just lighten up?? Rolling Eyes

Oh tosh to enlightened and educated times. They are great comedies of the past, still better than most drivel today - why not repeat them - just for the risk of still offending groups today with material from many years ago.

I certainly would still watch IAHHM and Till Death Us Do Part if they were repeated today.

It's not as simple as not showing things 'because they might cause offence' it's about a shift in society's values

Personally I never really 'got' IAHHM and despite being set historically it does feel really dated - Dad Army is set and was shot in in exactly the same eras..... but hasn't really dated at all.

Till Death I do like, but it has dated in anothr way - some of the cultural and topical references would be totally bafling to the modern audience.

I agree, nodnirG.

Sometimes you get the impression that certain "minority" are just looking for arguments and a reason for protest.

It's like the many people who call the BNP racist, if they actually sat down and read what Nick Griffin has to say, and the party polices etc, they would realise that alot of what the party stands for makes sense.

Nevertheless, the more I see of this sort of thing, the more I understand why there is so much hatred in the world today.

It is madness. The word liberal seems to have been made to mean the opposite by some parst of the media.

Not really because we ar enow much more conciousn of irony. So-called 'non-pc' things can be said and treated as 'ironic'. It works the same way, although if Alf Garnet was on the TV today there wuould be less doubt that he is a send up.

However bad some people think that so-called 'Political Correctness' is can you imagine life today with pre-'PC' social values.

Although the only ones making the fuss are those who complain about their supposed 'political correctness' .... they are far more uptight and angry than the so-called 'Guardian' people who apprently decide this stuff

And they would also find out that the rest of what they stand for is total bilge.

Which parts in particular?
