I bet they're kicking themselves for not using film in the first place, considering all the international sales and dvds

Some segments of Mr Bean were shot on film, most of the location footage was IIRC, and the rest is videotape. Some location stuff is videotape, even as far back as the first episode so I suppose it was a matter of what was available.

I believe Mr Bean in Room 426 (and Mind The Baby) were both totally on film.

Having watched about half of Room 426 over the weekend when it was on ITV 2, (and some previous episodes from last week) I can assure you that regardless of film or videotape footage, the picture quality was abysmal on ITV 2 HD. It is a disgrace that someone decided to do this and thought the results were acceptable enough to broadcast.

Probably all cut onto tape, hence the quality issues.

ITV3 have commissioned native HD transfers from the film of MANY ITV shows that were edited on video tape.. i.e. Wycliffe, Poirot.... I'm sure the Bean film is hiding somewhere and would be profitable to transfer.

But they've opted not to and decided to do a pure hack job and put out a woeful product in the end.

they should have left it as 4:3 and broadcast it upscaled instead of tampering with it and, essentially, destroying it.

The issue is not that segments of Mr Bean are on video or film, it's the fact ITV2 have totally butchered ALL the episodes of Mr Bean for broadcast and, as you say, consider it acceptable. ITV3 pillarboxes all its archive material on HD, as opposed to what ITV2 have done. I saw Do It Yourself and Back To School Mr Bean on Sunday afternoon ITV2 HD and flipped over to ITV2 SD to see pretty much the same effect. It was near enough unwatchable.

To be perfectly honest, I'd just rather ITV2 not show anything that isn't widescreen already. Yes, Mr Bean classic will never be HD no matter what you do to it and upscaled SD is far preferable to a butchered crop, pan and scan effort.

Back to thunderbirds are go.
For me this weeks flowed better with a strong story leading through out the episode. I presume they wanted to establish every character in the first two/long episode.

I enjoyed it too, having watched it in the 8am timeslot (entirely by accident); I even enjoyed the bits of Scrambled on afterwards.

I'm not sure I'll do it again though - the early start seemed to fry my brain, and I found myself starting to watch a third episode of Jeremy Kyle before I knew what was going on.

Classic score featured in the recreated FireFlash landing sequence, really quite good!

I really think this new series is very good, both production wise and story/character wise. The Fireflash episode especially i enjoyed because of its links to the original. However my one criticism when i saw the first episode still remains. The show is far too fast paced. Everything happens too quickly. I realise this is because they have to fit so much in a commercial half hour, but the whole elevator car segment for example was probably done in a minute or two tops. They should have removed one element of the story and given more time to the others. I would have rather they focused on one element for a bit longer rather than three elements (The Hood stealing Fireflash, the elevator car sequence and Thunderbird 2 assisting the landing) Wouldn't it have been better to have spent a bit more time with The Hood, then spend the rest of the time just having a more detailed elevator car sequence, then having the whole Thunderbird 2 rescue sequence at the end?

Considering so much TV nowadays is dragged out to fill an hour being fast paced should be seen as an asset, not an issue. Remember too it's still aimed at kids so it has to be pacey.

And they did already cut a lot out from the original episode Trapped In the Sky. Penelope and Parker's involvement was completely removed for instance.

Oh believe me there's nothing wrong with fast paced. I think the original 'Trapped in the Sky' episode dragged on for way too long for example, but this passes what can be classed as fast paced for me. It was almost like they made the entire episode as a trailer if you see what i mean. No single moment was given any time to breathe.
