I think the ill-fated Twiggy and Coleen era just effectively had a sting rather than full titles. The squares were introduced a year later as you say, initially with John Leslie - and those titles IMO were much better than the circular version which followed.

Yep just the sting with the sunflower and Century Gothic logo. Despite Fern & John becoming main presenters before September 2002 (as the production team rushed Fern off her maternity leave) to my recollection the sunflower sting remained. A shame that those previous titles didn't have a longer life as there was clearly a lot of work put into them. Was it known in the September 2000 that Richard & Judy were to leave?

The squares harked back to the 90's titles with them featuring icons/features and celeb and hosts faces. They continued to 2005 (with a font change in Sept 2004 (I believe). They were replaced by the purple and orange logo from April 2005 to tie in with the launch of ITV Day.

Would be nice to see something from Coleen/Twiggy/Fern/John and Phillip's early days. Best titles by far were the squares, as the circles seemed to rush the theme over.

Further to this, I did a bit of searching and found this contemporary thread from the beginning of the Twiggy and Coleen era:

http://tvforum.uk/tvhome/morning-television-37727/page-1/

Interesting tidbits:
1. Apparently This Morning was only in 'fake widescreen' before September 2001 (14:9 bars over a 4:3 picture)
2. There indeed weren't any proper opening titles for the Twiggy and Coleen era - just a sting ("What's happened to the opening titles? The classic theme tune has been reduced to a short sting!")
3. Confirmation that the previous titles did only last a year ("The 2000 new look only lasted one year didn't it, It wasn't popular with anybody!")
4. Lorraine Kelly at the same time launched a 'This Morning' rival on Sky One. It was so well loved it isn't even on her Wikipedia page! Interesting of course since she ended up becoming an actual 'This Morning' presenter a few years later. There's a clip of the titles/a sting here. And here's a familiar voiceover for the call-in.
5. If you were wondering, Twiggy was sacked pretty quickly but Coleen stayed around until February (you know a thread is old when it starts with "Just read on Teletext…"!)

I'm more intrigued about that Sky One Lorraine programme that was mentioned. A GMTV production for Sky One? where they redressed the set between 9:19 and 9:25 and Lorraine Kelly then carried on with another show?

So via the links from VMPhil to answer an earlier question Richard and Judy announced their departure from This Morning on 4th May (informing ITV only shortly before announcing it to the nation), leaving on the 12th July.

Didn't remember Lorraine doing a rival show - I'm guessing ITV didn't have a stake in GMTV at the time.

Also looking at the dates think Phil has now been on the show longer than Richard and Judy.

It must have been. It looks like they added in the Lorraine branded boards behind the main sofa. Obviously they would have had 50 minutes or so with Lorraine presenting from the smaller area to fit it in. It did take 5 minutes or so to realise that it was the GMTV set. It was the table that gave it away on the wide shot.

EDIT: Thinking about it, would they have been more likely to use the performance area and move the sofa and table over?

Also I suppose it wasn't really a rival show as it was on an hour at 9:25, so rivalling Trisha if anything.

Obviously Sky's attempt to get in on the daytime chat market which probably lasted about five minutes.

Whilst searching for that thread, I also found this post from a 2006 thread which I found quite intriguing:

It appears that Maureen Duffy was the main reason, or at the very least, one of the main reasons why Richard and Judy left. From an article in the Guardian titled "Why we left ITV, by Richard and Judy", published July 2002:

Quote:
Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan have divulged for the first time the real reason behind their shock defection from ITV, confirming that Maureen Duffy, the head of daytime TV, was the cause of their decision.

The pair, who gave no warning about their decision, said they found the internal politics "very difficult to cope with" following the appointment of Ms Duffy, who has since quit.

As the famous TV duo prepared to start the thirteenth series of the show in September 2000 it became clear Ms Duffy wanted to make major changes against the wishes of the programme's makers, they said.

"There were never any personal bust-ups between Maureen Duffy and us. But there were significant professional disagreements between our programme team and the new boss, and we backed the team," said Madeley.

Madeley and Judy Finnigan were particularly concerned about Duffy's plans to take This Morning "downmarket".

"We knew that many of our viewers liked tuning into intelligent discussions about a whole range of subjects and that they would not be happy if drip-fed too many items on lipstick, hair, cookery and make-overs," said Finnigan.

The husband and wife team was also concerned about plans to split them up on screen.

"I hated the possibility that we would now be separated, and that I would be expected to do all the "caring" womanly items while Richard was doing what "macho" human-interest stuff there was left," said Finnigan.

Duffy was widely blamed for the loss of Madeley and Finnigan and was replaced in January as ITV's daytime controller by Liam Hamilton.

And from an earlier article, January 2002, which suggests she may have been responsible for the 2000 title sequence, and that they had little time to develop the 2001 revamp after Richard and Judy left abruptly:

Quote:
For example, Madeley and Finnegan were asked to present items separately and they claimed Ms Duffy "interfered" with the show's title sequence.

The ITV executive - known in television circles for her leopard-print and leather outfits and her nickname, Duffy the Vampire Slayer - made it clear after her arrival that the celebrity couple, who had a controlling influence on This Morning, needed to be reined back.

Ms Duffy, a former BBC marketing executive, was convinced the daytime show needed a revamp, believing it to be too costly and lacking edge.

However, the unexpected departure of Madeley and Finnigan last July caught ITV on the hop and gave the bosses little time to devise a replacement show for September.

Also - was Schofield a replacement for Coleen Nolan as the Friday co-presenter, or did she leave earlier in the year?

So going from that above clip being from 2000, I presume that these titles:

https://youtu.be/iMz1PoxCKyw?t=2m28s

...were very short lived? I'm guessing that the show went widescreen sometime in 2000/2001 (September 2000 maybe? As that's usually when ITV daytime shows have a refresh or rebrand) and so those new titles were made, but were only used for a brief period as Richard and Judy left in July 2001. Again, I presume that these titles continued to be used until September 2001 when Twiggy and Coleen Nolan began their ill-fated tenure as hosts

Don't forget in those days This Morning broke up for summer, so Richard & Judy left on the last Thursday of the series. Friday's episode as I recall was an OB with (I think) Kay Adams and someone else giving a house away.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a version of those titles without Richard & Judy but I'm happy to be corrected.

John Lesley and Coleen presented for a while. I even think they tried John, Coleen and Twiggy together shortly after the revamp as well. The Lorraine show was strange as she wasn't allowed the plug it on-air on GMTV.

Here's John and Coleen presenting from October/November 2001
