I quite love how they have just started the end of the show and as the first caller gives their answers, the fear of god can be heard in their voices as he starts to give the correct answers.

Given that they still had five and a half minutes until they went off air at that point, I can quite understand why.

(unless you've heard Phil's semi-justified vent in the Talking Telephone Numbers video)

What does Phil actually say? I’ve never been able to catch his words properly.

From what I can hear:
‘He can wait for at least five f***ing minutes. At least five minutes. Just let my hands calm down just a bit.’

Followed by someone in the gallery saying ‘Don’t listen to him, cos he’s entitled to have a go at us’.

Just to point out that in Richard Marson's book about Blue Peter, he talks about working with Pip on Going Live and saying that he specifically made a point of learning the names of everyone working on the programme, including all the studio crew, and used to give him lifts home when he was a lowly AFM and living in a horrible part of London. He also says that he met him for the first time in a decade and wondered if he'd even remember him, and Pip recognised him immediately and started chatting as if they'd only seen each other the previous day.

So despite some posters on this thread seemingly obsessed with Pip not being a nice man, I've never heard anyone who's ever worked with him have a bad word to say about him.

I probably wouldn't have remained as composed as Schofe if I'd been fronting that episode of Talking Telephone Numbers.

In Phil's defence, I think a little vent of frustration is allowed after that Talking Telephone Numbers mess, adrenaline would have been high.

As for This Morning, a brilliant look around and goodbye to the studio that has been the home of the programme for nearly 22 years. Another reason why I don't properly understand them trying to make the new studio identical when the audience know that they'll be leaving. Ruth kept mentioning 5 years that they'll be away, wasn't the proposed completion 2022?

I enjoy both pairings on This Morning, Eamonn & Ruth have brilliant chemistry but I sometimes get annoyed as a viewer at the way that Eamonn talks over Ruth and details are missed, that's there style and it works for them.

I remember there was an immense amount of discussion when that video of TTN first surfaced on here, but what I still can't work out is why they didn't rewind the tape instead of writing off the minutes they had to make up on the spot. I guess you could argue that if they played the tape back, viewers would've watched it thinking "hang on, I've just seen this flash past, this isn't live". But I figured the penny would've dropped once the VT operator pressed fast forward.

As for the debate about how Phil can be disliked when he's apparently so nice, I suppose there's some comparisons to Bob Monkhouse in that he was so slick he was branded "smarmy". Maybe Phil is just too nice for some people in a world where we except nothing but scandal from many people in the public eye.

One reason might be because the tape was running again and to go to breakdown to recue it to the exact spot isn't ideal, plus that would have meant less time at the end. Though of course that is what they got eventually when the tape did rewind!

The mystery to me is that on the second cock up VT seem to be confused with which tape was on air so maybe there was either a backing copy they didn't go to, or the copy was put in after the first cock up... or more likely the VT operator thought he was rewinding Part 1

She also kept saying 'this studio is being refurbished' when it isn't and the rest of the site is going through much more than a refurb

From what I saw of him at the filming of Mr and Mrs a few years back he was dead nice.

"Sorry there was a VT problem there Pres" (No sh*t)

Still captivating viewing. Philip really shows how natural a broadcaster he is here and I particularly love the barbed comments like "fast forward" and "we're running out of time" as it probably sums up his disbelief and at the same time feelings of "What are we going to do now?" It's a miracle that first caller wasn't correct and they were able to naturally pad out by over-explaining or reading a sentence or two slower. If you had tuned in after the VT cockups you wouldn't have known any different.

Phil's frustrations are perfectly justified. He's off air and understandably frustrated that he has been left to deal with a problem that wasn't his fault. OK, I know this is why the "talent" are paid handsomely for their work to deal with situations like this but at the same time they have a production team around them to make them look good. Phil did his bit but the VT errors let him down.

Back on topic... I also find Ruth and Eamonn a much more engaging partnership on This Morning. Both are very capable and likeable broadcasters and they don't have to rely on being together to make it work. But they (obviously) work really well together too. That probably seems like a contradiction but what I mean is that you don't ever feel like there's a "junior" partner when they're on.

Very lucky that those first two callers weren't able to answer what I would have said were pretty simple questions!

I don't think Phillip comes out of that badly, he's been put in a position where his credibility could have been damaged by it looking like the the game was rigged. I think that insisting on taking 5 minutes to calm down speaks volumes about his character and professionalism, I can imagine that some people would have stormed into the gallery and started shouting in those circumstances.

I think the guy (Director?) who acknowledges that Phil is entitled to have a go deserves credit too, for reading the situation well and trying to diffuse it.

I echo the positive comments, I went to see a recording of The Cube and Phil was more than happy to have a chat with the audience between recording and couldn’t do more to help try and relax the contestants! (‘Don’t worry the magic of tele will sort that!’)

Maybe with the lottery on ITV they could sort out a new series of Winning Lines Wink
