They do work very well on the programme, and as the article says they appeal to a younger demographic and their fans. The programme doesn't seem to be any different in terms of content which shows that they're not forgetting their older viewers.
They seem very likeable, and are good cover for the Friday holiday slot, a shame that they can't have a bit more exposure.
To be honest I don't think a reviewer at the Radio Times is the target audience of This Morning all year around. I think Ruth and Eamonn are the future, should Holly and Phil decide to leave.

I can't see Eamonn leaving Sunrise for This Morning.

Maybe not at the moment, but long terms lots of twists and turns can happen in television to mean what you'd expect to happen doesn't. Sky News could go through budget cuts and they could decide to go into the direction of cheaper talent, ITV could offer him and Ruth This Morning in addition to other meaty projects to tempt him, not to mention to mention the fact Ruth is his wife he could be possibly denying her a big opportunity to should he turn it down.
Ironic that Sky News is talked about in terms of budget cuts and cheaper talent when This Morning is a far more likely bet for budget cuts and almost as likely, the axe. I know which horse I'd back if I was Eamonn.
Only reason this tat is still on is due to it being an ITV production and promotional tool for them. I agree Eamonn and Ruth are far superior to the main two morons, but what's the phrase you can't polish a...?
Maybe Helen Warner will have the bottle to get rid of it at some stage. She must wonder how it got to this after her days as a producer on it in the Liverpool days.

This Morning probably makes money though, Sky News doesn't. Having said that Sunrise is probably the channels most profitable programme. My post was being hypothetical anyway in response to another posters certainty on this unlikely situation.

This is when the obsessive nature of this forums analysis of all programmes interferes with the ability of certain members enjoyment of most television. I personally think that taking some daytime, tabloid, TV for what it is would allow you and others to realise that Holly and Phil are actually good presenters and have a chemistry that other programmes lack, and equally as light hearted as the programme content itself.
Personally I find that Phil and Holly are fine with the fluffier features, yet when they do the topical parts, Holly especially struggles, where as Eamonn and Ruth with their journalistic backgrounds are able to seamlessly go between all of the features on the programme.
However TM doesn't make money from having all rounded middle-aged presenters, Holly in particular is advertiser friendly and attracts younger viewers, in the same way the Humes couple do, even if their presenting is at times wooden.
As long as TM can continue to get those product placements in and the tabloid guests, it isn't going anywhere, despite the BBC continually beating them in the same time slot.

Never thought I'd see Eamonn Holmes describes as "the future".
