Well I just watched the Vault, and don't kill me for saying this, but it all looked like a bit of a fix. A few points :-

-Mel didn't start the clock until 21:11, and since the show ends at 21:15 (Or is supposed to) I knew it was gonna be won right from the word go.

-The contestant had practically answered the question before Mel had finished reading it out! Also she had way more than 9 seconds anyway, since Mel only started the clock after reading the question (Plenty of extra thinking time)

-The series must be coming to a end soon

-At the end the contestant had something like £30,000 - £28,000 after broker fees. How come the final total was something like £704,000 Shocked

And while I think of it, Mel has NEVER, EVER talked about the last question choice IIRC.

So well done, but I still think it was more of a fix than a win.

She was a great winner and obviously did have the knowledge to unlock the vault as she knew lots of different stuff

And before any more allegations of a fix, which of course it wasn't, why would they fix it at £700,000? It already went far too high than anyone was expecting. See the very long very detailed rules at itv.com they will explain everything

I was far more worried about the broker who mis-pronounced "Pepys", as if she was reading it (badly) off an autocue.

That incident got me wondering about a fix.

well i didn't think it was a fix. I thought it was won fair and square. Well done to the girl and I hope she has a fantastic time at University just like me for the past 3 years!

Woo hoo!

Great telly!

The broker who was an "administrator" (read secretary) was hopeless - mind you it was disturbing how poor all the brokers and contestants were.

The "pepees" answer was just an example of how bad they were - pepys had already been suggested once.

The whole program is designed such that the timeframe is tight (so it should be), The timing was such that they could go to a phoneline if neccessary........

If you were going to try to fix a win, then the time to do it would be after the million pound mark ( eg £1,100,000) so that you could claim "the biggest win on a British Television game show"

Which begs the question, Stuart, do you know if the ITC still rule on the highest possible win, or is it just up to the companies now?

I know the rule used to be for a maximum of one million, but that rule could well have been removed by now.

The last part of the show is live and did run over

They have the questions on a screen in front of them don't they?

I assume that must be the done thing for the final question

Yes and it means that next week's final show is a bit of a disappointment, If it was a fix ITV wouldn't want that

Not sure of the point you are making there

You really think they can go around giving £700,000 out willy nilly?

I remember in the early 90's when the maximum prize fund was £6,400 and it was that prize which was wrapped around Bob Monkhouse's $64,000 Question quiz.
