The Steph Show

Steph leaving BBC Breakfast for Channel 4

It was always planned to be a lunchtime show and it’s unlikely that’s changed. I would assume it will be in the slot before Countdown.

The brief has since been taken offline, but Leeds Live wrote it up at the start of the year - obviously the ambition to get the show on by November has since slipped:

Forgot there was already a thread for this so here's what I put in the C4 thread:

Could only manage 15 minutes of The Steph Show. A tender process involving ten companies, hundreds of thousands spent on pilots involving months of work, all for it to result in Steph asking viewers to email in to tell her about any dreams they've recently had.

That plus a wholly uninteresting video diary from a larger family's experience of quarantine, Steph asking Keith Lemon his thoughts on Easyjet cabin crew being asked to volunteer for the NHS, and Anton du Beke's 100th inexplicable appearance on Channel 4 daytime was enough for me to turn off. I appreciate they've turned this round quickly but I highly doubt the proper show would have been any better in any shape or form.

No one is going to watch this. Yet another dreadful Ian Katz commission for one of his mates.

It's a remodelled space within the Leeds Docks development I believe, I think it was formally a street food market? All of the companies that were bidding for the tender for this show ended up saying they were going to use this place as it was literally the only suitable studio space in the city.

A news summary for Channel 4 News wasnt quite smooth. 12.30 is the new slot.

My contribution is small but you are welcome.

Having stuck with it, it isn't the worst daytime show I've ever watched.

I hate the branding. Hate it. From the name - whoever thought of that, to the awful Dickinson's Real Deal music and the graphics.
We had a money matters segment, followed by a Channel 4 News update, which I kind of feel is where they should focus the rest of the show to, playing to Steph's strengths. It feels strange to bring someone in from BBC News to get them hosting a celebrity chat show. Especially when said celebrities are Keith Lemon and Anton du Beke on Skype. (I'm not suggesting they should have been there in person by the way, just that Skype makes it feel even more awful.)

Dare I say, I feel they should have modeled the show on the ill-fated Megyn Kelly Today in the U.S. More news and human interest focused, with consumer segments, but geared as a daytime TV show.

EDIT: I'd like to add that I understand the show was rushed on air incredibly quickly, but surely they're matching the content for what they had in mind for the eventual launch?

Think it’s unfair to judge the show on what they’ve had to put out in current circumstances - it seems more an attempt to put something on that’s live and relatively uplifting. It’s certainly a welcome break from the business-as-usual dirge on the other channels.

I think it’ll find it’s feet, Steph is a natural and endearing host who can straddle that line between serious and fun very well.

Steph's a real talent, and as a result doesn't neatly fit into a presenter box. She's bright, a great journalist, a warm presenter, and fiercely proud of her background. Her work on Breakfast, Watchdog and Shop Well For Less demonstrates that.

At the moment she's just the person a lot of people would like for company during the day. It's good to see Channel Four trying something genuinely different.

Trust me, I’m sure they’ve got a full title sequence planned, showcasing Leeds.

Is that just a hunch?
