Good to see ITV picking up a couple of additional international rugby games ahead of the Six Nations conclusion and the following Amazon Cup. As well as the Six Nations game between Italy and Ireland on the 24th they're also screening Scotland v Georgia and France v Wales on ITV4 on the 23rd/24th.
Premier Sports seem to have acquired rights to some of the PPV Premier League games, in Ireland only, and are showing Newcastle v Man United in Ireland only. Not sure how this has come about, since it wasn’t originally part of the deal. Indeed Sky is still offering the same game to Irish customers at €16.95 on Sky Sports Box Office! Anyway, that ties up Premier Sports 1, while Serie A dominated on Premier 2, and of course LaLigaTV has its usual LaLiga. So yes, GAA gets spilt onto BoxNation, which hasn’t been available to new customers in Ireland since the tie up with Premier was announced (their website still says details of ROI subscriptions will be announced in May, and we are now really at “which May?” stage, but it’s not like they’re showing a whole pile of live boxing anyway).
The second thing to note is that the GAA is making games available in Ireland by GAAGO, its pay-per-view OTT steaming service run by RTÉ (yes, the same RTE that made a whole fuss about Sky getting the rights and games being denied to people who couldn’t afford Sky - but hey, it’s okay to charge as long it’s an RTE doing it and not Murdoch (as was at the time)!) And they will use licence fee money to promo it to bits too like they have with WatchLOI which is based on the same platform. Not a contradiction in this at all. No.
It could be all academic anyway though, given NPHET’s recommendation today.
