So, MOTDx...
Anyone...?

I don't think MOTDx had been on when you posted that, but it has been now, and I had a look at it. It's certainly very distinctive with not a hint of BBC Sport or MOTD (or Reith) branding anywhere.

It seems a bit contrived, it's set in a penthouse flat, in the intro the four of them have to rather self-consciously walk towards the camera, and there was a link where they were playing pool. To me it felt a bit like they were the Salford gang on Why Don't You, but obviously they're aiming at people younger than me who won't make that reference.

I mean, Saint and Greavsie it ain't, but there is space for all kinds of football show and there can be some based around tactics and analysis and some based around culture, the two can co-exist. Certainly it seems a lot more distinctive than The Premier League Show ever did. I probably won't watch it again but I'm an old man. Given how much I shuddered when one of them said his "childhood hero" was Jermain Defoe I'm clearly not in the target audience.

I agree it seems a bit contrived. I only saw bits yesterday but it felt like someone out of the demographic came up with something to try and appeal to youth audiences and the just added the ‘X’ because they thought it sounded cool.

I think it would probably do well as online content, I think it’s probably a bit lost in its slot on BBC Two and probably would work better as BBC Three content and on YouTube and Facebook.

‘The Premier League Show’ brand probably would have worked better for youth audiences than it did in its old guise. But I understand they needed to launch a new brand to show that its different and understand they want to grow the appeal of the MOTD brand.

I agree it seems to have more purpose the Premier League show did, but it’s probably in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Reports today by The Times that Isa Guha will be the presenter for BBC TV Cricket from next year. It is understood she will no longer work for Sky Sports but as previously mentioned will continue with TMS. The full article also believes Andrew Flintoff will be involved with commentary for The Hundred.

See more at: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/isa-guha-the-new-face-of-bbc-cricket-smashes-a-boundary-or-two-fgrcd7qh5

If the 5th Tests ends today or tomorrow there will be some change with televised cricket next year in the UK. Gower & Botham are both leaving Sky, I understand Gower wants to continue but will the BBC use him? Ward is taking over but if Guha is with the BBC who will be the deputy presenter. It is also Channel 5 last test after 13 years and Mark Nicholas could be broadcasting his last test match after 20 years on Channel 4 & Channel 5, I am sure he will continue broadcasting ICC World Feeds and at present since Channel 9 Cricket Coverage ended he is covering South African summer test matches. Boycott is also approaching 80 so may retire but may fancy a few more years with the BBC as he is already on TMS. Suppose we will find out in the future.

Yes, as Toby says, this is a massive changing of the guard for cricket TV coverage. Sky are moving things on with the replacement of Gower and Botham, we are unlikely to see Mark Nicholas next summer after 20 years service, and it's the last Channel 5 highlights show after 14 years. Channel 5 in particular have done sterling service to the game. Every single day of test cricket in this country over the last 14 years has seen a consistently scheduled programme (at 7.15pm between 2006 and 2010 and then at 7pm from 2011 onwards) with superb production values. It will be much missed.

Incidentally, it is worth having a look at Gower's and Botham's final farewell from Sky, embedded in the tweet below. It's quite unusual for a TV presenter to depart a programme in quite the way that Gower has - he has made it quite plain that he is not leaving through his own choice!

Similarly when Eddie Hemmings left Sky's Rugby League coverage at Easter, there was a tribute programme to him, where he commented that he would have preferred to have gone out commentating on the Grand Final, but it hadn't worked out that way or some such that indicated it wasn't entirely his choice to go when he did - might be wrong though. Although in Eddie's case I don't think he's looking to pick up any more work like Gower will be.

I could see Sky having some age discrimination cases brought against them at this rate.

The thing in their favour with the cricket is that they have retained David Lloyd and Michael Holding who are both older than Gower and Botham. So it is not the case that they have removed the two oldest members of the commentary team.

Sky and C4 have extended their deal covering (and extending) a number of areas, including C4 having F1 highlights and the British Grand Prix live.

That's great news. How many years does this deal last for both Sky & C4?

They don't say, but the educated guess would be the 'multi year deal' would be to follow the Sky F1 rights until they expire at the end of the 2024 season.

As I speculated a few days ago, UEFA Club rights 2021-4 cycle auctions begin in October. France the first on the block....
