IIRC Main Event is the old Sky Sports 1, it may be for legacy reasons to other platforms that this seems to simulcast the other Sky Sports channels to a degree. This is the problem with "themed" channels to an extent because there always comes a point where one of them will be showing something that isn't in the channel mandate. Mix does this to an extent already but is currently home to the netball.

I think your right the simulcast as you say is for watching on non-sky platforms but it is the highest rating Sky Sports channel usually getting more than the specialist channels. For example more watched the Cricket World Cup Final on Sky Sports Main Event than Sky Sports Cricket and Sky One and Super Sunday rates higher than on the Premier League channel.

The only time in recent memory I remember having different sports rather than a simulcast on main event to others is during the European Qualifiers/Nations League where you have England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic playing on the same night where you have a match on Sky Sports Main Event, another on Sky Sports PL, another on Sky Sports Football and maybe another on Sky Sports Mix. Problem is really for Now TV customers as they can't get Sky Sports Red Button so have to put something on a themed channel.

It must be the simulcasting that makes Main Event rate high, you only get it on Sky if you take all the other sports channels as well, not if you only take one or two.

Although I do notice Formula 1 is popping up on Sky One regularly as a very tightly edited highlights package. They have covered an entire weekend or two of F1 (albeit at the races that have start times in the UK of like 4am) on Sky One as well but I'm not entirely sure what this is supposed to be a response to, unless its an attempt to increase the visibility of the sport while keeping it on Sky behind a paywall of some sort.

It's an attempt to give those who don't sub to SSF1 a taste to try and get them to, given Sky One is on the first page of the EPG. I think the first three races this season were simulcast on Sky One as was qualifying for the British GP.

They used to do this often during the races Channel 4 also had live coverage of, either on Sky One or SS Mix.

I assume the darts on SS Football was made available to SS Arena/Action subscribers, as it would normally be there, or at least was simulcast with Arena/Action red button.
Watch it and find out.

Sky One seems to be getting used more and more for sport - they've had nightly highlights of the Cricket World Cup, and of course simulcast the final. Be interesting to see if they put highlights of The Ashes on it as well.

The Darts on Football seemed an odd one and TBF that sort of thing doesn't happen very often, and probably wouldn't have happened tonight if they hadn't handed SS Mix over to Netball for the duration of the Netball World Cup. Considering Main Event opted out of the golf earlier they arguably could have left The Open at 7pm to switch to the darts and have it on Main Event, but given their options Football was probably the sensible one. With SS Box Office also up and running tonight a busy summers evening for Sky Sports.
I preferred the internet when it had a sense of humour.

Anyone know what channel the darts is on this afternoon - in the printed guides at least it's not listed for any.

Also rather strangely BBC2 Wales originally were opting out of the Netball World Cup Final at 5.30pm to show a repeat of The Repair Shop then at 6pm a programme on archive Welsh TV, which could easily take the 7pm slot instead of a narrative repeat. Someone there has seen sense not though and dropped the opt out shows completely.

They've ditched the unnecessary Netball simulcast then.

P.S. I'm no Golf fan but a shame there isn't at least a Masters style golf deal so the weekend action of The Open is FTA. I suspect it's no coincidence the recent extension of the Sky deal came just before an update of the Crown Jewels list was announced.

Surely though Sky's biggest financial benefit of having The Open is through having people buy a weekly or daily pass on Now TV - anyone keen on golf and willing to subscribe would surely already have for the rest of their portfolio. In a way it's as odd as if Sky bought exclusive rights to the FA Cup Final despite having the subscribers there for the Premier League all season.

On the same token, be interested to know if Sky’s Formula 1 deal had lead to many more subscriptions, surely anyone desperate to see the races live would have had a subscription when they just had most of them live rather than all but one. Again I suspect sales of Now TV passes are where they would have seen the biggest increase.

It's worth remembering that Main Event is the channel that's usually shown in pubs and other venues, so Sky will usually schedule the channel to give priority to sports they think their business customers would want to show. I believe that's the one of the big reasons Main Event exists, at least on the Sky platform. The expectation is home customers will use the themed channels, and they usually do.

Lately Sky does seem to have had a bit of trouble with having more simultaneous live sporting events than the themed channels have been able to accomodate. I've seen a few occasions of late where Sky have turned on 'match choice' on the red button (at least on Sky Q), where they've run a second version of the themed channel with the same branding but a different event.

Yesterday's Rugby Championship from Jo'burg was using South African presentation & commentary, as expected. But the Argentina vs All Blacks game had NZ presentation & commentary.. I happen to prefer it to the normal style, but odd all the same.
