Side note, my local team (Ebbw Vale) are playing Cross Keys on S4C now. There was also a game on BBC Two Wales yesterday (Bedwas v Cardiff), this is the first season I recall having live coverage consistently, and is especially the first time I have seen two games live in two days on two different channels! It's basically filler for the departure of the Pro 14 to Premier on both channels.

Anyway, S4C used the BBC Sport graphics today. I do understand why, because BBC and S4C have some sort of relation to each other in ownership, but I have never seen this before. Does anyone else recall a situation like this?

Yes. In 2002-3, the first season that the English Language rights for welsh club rugby returned to BBC Wales after HTV pulled out, the graphics on S4C were similar to those on BBC Wales. Of course, BBC Wales was producing S4C's coverage.

In contrast, during the 1997-2002 period, when HTV Wales had the rights with S4C, although the same company produced the coverage, Cwmni 10, both firms used different graphics. This was despite HTV plugging the S4C Y Clwb Rygbi website in their trailers.

S4C still have Pro14 - they have 1 game a week as before, usually the Saturday 5pm kickoff. Up until this season Premiership rugby has been a filler for S4C on European and international weekends for a couple of years now.

HTV used words, S4C pictures - either to be cool, edgy and different, or to overcome the language barrier, or even because the teams' colours would be more instantly recognisable (as we discussed 2 years ago : https://tvforum.uk/forums/post1034727#post-1034727)

The HTV/S4C matchup was linked in other ways though - HTV's programme was not called "The Rugby Club" (see below), S4C's was "Y Clwb Rygbi". Their theme tunes were also incredibly similar. A brief glimpse of HTV's coverage can be seen here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Wg-tefQRaQ

Firstly, I didn't enjoy that clip, for one reason; I'm a Cardiff RFC supporter. I recall watching that match here in Fife on S4C digidol live, and it was a very bad experience.......

HTVs programme was called "The Front Row", wheras "The Rugby Club" was a now defunct midweek news and review programme on Sky Sports, which was axed BEFORE it lost Premiership rugby to BT Sport.

This junction has a trailer for the front row. Notice that they use the team colours in squares in the graphics on the trailer, but it's my understanding that they didn't do this in the highlights or live coverage, and the normal HTV branded clock was used for HTV's eight live games a season.

Only 67 as well. Sad

I loved Football Italia as a kid. Only later, of course, did I learn that Brackers didn't actually commentate from Italy - he simply worked from monitors in London.

Good tweet from Applemask as always:

I think it was Peter Brackley who a colleague told me would sometimes commentate off-tube from home - using an ISDN line and making use of the fact that in the days of analogue there'd be negligible delay between the studio and the viewer.

NBA back to Sky Sports:

It had been widely touted as going to Eleven.

Anyone but Eleven.

New season starts tomorrow, so Sky leaving it unusually late to make a song and dance about it.

And leaves a minor dent in the bodywork of BT Sport in the process. Wonder if they'll try and go pinch NHL from Premier Sports to help fill the winter overnight gaps
