Is it really that severe and/or unusual? I'm only 24 but I recall snow storms much worse then this being a yearly occurrence when I was young. It just doesn't seem that bad to me and should be at least the bare minimum the country could cope with. I would've expected to be able to at least catch a bloody bus!

If you're 24 and remember it from childhood, then that would be about right. They said, "worst in 18 years" - so those two facts aren't contradictory.

There's no doubt that they could have done better - but we generally have a mild climate here - and one would imagine that the resources for shifting problem snowstorms has eroded away somewhat.

How much does it cost to keep us in a state of readiness for a 1 in 18 year blizzard?

I don't think it would cost that much to keep a surplus mountain of salt in a warehouse indefinitely, surely? :s Once it's there, it's there. And I would think the large amount of council tax most of us pay, would go some distance to covering any costs. We can manage to grit main roads for the frequent frosty nights we have here, after all.

It may have been the heaviest snowfall in 18 years, but we do get snowfall every year, even if a light flurry-- so snow isn't alien to us in winter. I may be wrong, but didn't it snow last Easter-- possibly in south-east England? We don't get as much snow as many countries on our latitude I grant you, but we get frosts all the time in late autumn/winter; so I wouldn't say it's that mild in this country-- even in southeastern England! I don't think it is down to stock levels. They had enough of the stuff the problem was getting it out there, while there were some failings with that even when they were trying to grit the roads, the snow was so heavy it just got covered up. The real problem is the lack of vehicles for the amount of snowfall.

Seems the snow boosted ratings all round yesterday, in particularly the news bulletins. Forget all the stuff about Obama, a bit of snow has given News at Ten it's highest ratings since it returned, at 4.8m. The BBC got 5.2m - at 1pm, with 7.1m and 7.4m at 6pm and 10pm.
