I got the feeling Matt Allwright wasn't best pleased with the situation. The handovers seemed quite stilted from Matt's side and then he seemed to over-egg his segment whilst sitting on a footstool in the corner of the studio and name check Watchdog at every opportunity and how many years it's been running, even during the report.

I think we can safely say that the days of getting a company CEO into the studio and holding them to account in a feisty interview are over. It's just going to be the odd consumer based report on how Margaret from Swadlincote is paying too much for her leccy. I still think it's a huge mistake, surely they could do better than this.

The first Watchdog on The One Show VT included Matt's Rogue Traders bike and a less than subliminal reference to the fact that they can't completely axe the format because of the BBC's PSB requirements for consumer news.

However the links between Matt and the fluffy One Show presenters are jarring.

In future, it looks like I'll only be watching the Watchdog segments on iPlayer as I have no interest in the rest of the content.

They'd be better off just keeping it going as a daytime format.

I suspect there's prime time minutes of consumer affairs that have the be broadcast which bar the occasional 8pm documentary this feature also covers.

I don't think we can safely say that given we're in a period where they can't get anyone into the studio.

All the One Show personnel have been shoved on that stool in recent weeks, for obvious reasons. I quite like it because it feels like they're jesters being brought it for the amusement of Queen Alex.

Jesters? What about a magician? (Stephen Mulhern is on!)

Mind you I was somewhat surprised when Newsnight wasn't on on Friday... took me ages to realise why.

I don't normally take much notice of Easter, even less so this year

They are worse than the Mail for churnalism. If any paper goes bust during this crisis I would hope it's them - though nowadays they'll take the Mirror with them.

The big difference between the Mail and the Express is that the Mail has always been decently resourced and funded and as a consequence is a quality product. The Express was asset stripped and reduced down to the bare bones by its previous owner, it's trying to be The Mail on a fraction of the resources.

The owners of The Mirror haven't improved it much. Their papers, both national and local have long had really appalling websites - multiple pop up adverts, surveys before you read, auto playing video ads etc. Combining that mess with the Express's awful clickbait is a terrible combination

According to an interview on GMB with Lorraine earlier in the week Kym Marsh said that should have been hosting The One Show this week but unfortunately they have got to self isolate as a household, Alex must have been drafted in at late notice, and what a talent she is too.
