Appointing Manford dictates a serious partner is required, UNLESS the programme agenda is to be skewed, which might be what's in hand.

Rumours at one point mentioned plans to skew it the other way, with Chiles and Bleakley presenting Monday - Thursday with more serious items and Bleakley and Evans presenting light hearted items on Fridays. I don't know if there was an truth in that and if there was, I don't know if Friday's show would have been less serious than the then current format or if the other shows were to be made more serious. I wonder if any of those plans remind for The All New One Show, with Jason Manford being chosen as one of the new presenters, I suspect not.

Christine Bleakley doesn't have any journalism background though does she?

She didn't before she started - but she's been doing the show for three years now - so has probably gained through experience what she might not have had through academic study.

I think the word isn't 'serious' it is 'credible'. The One Show has a wide agenda of topics - from pretty serious current affairs to much lighter stuff.

The presenter pairing has to be able to do both ends of the spectrum - and be able to ask sensible, pertinent questions on stuff like personal finance, the recession, inflation, 'issues' like religious fundamentalism, racism, drug abuse etc. but also be able to dress up in a silly costume and throw custard pies at each other to break a record, or to fall into paddling pools in a low-budget recreation of hole in the wall.

The presenters don't have to be "serious" per se - but they do have to be comfortable and credible in the range of situations the show puts them in.

You don't want a "serious" presenter sat next to a "comedian" - you want to presenters who can cover the spectrum of the show together. (I think Jason is a lot more than a comedian - he's a bright bloke, with a quick wit, and a nice mainstream manner.)

I could see Fern doing a brilliant job - particularly after her interview with Tony Blair - though she is probably old enough to be Jason's mum. I could also see Gabby Logan doing a good job - she was the best female stand-in they've had (She did a week covering Christine with Nicky Campbell and Matt Baker covering Adrian).

I do think of all the names mentioned Gabby Logan is the best option.

I liked the suggestion of Alex Lovell.

Suspect the spectre of the "five" phone scandal gameshow still precludes that...

(ISTR that Points West were very concerned that the Six O'Clock News were going to run a headline of Alex presenting said show at the height of the phonevote scandal when she was likely to be presenting the Points West regional headlines in the same sequence...)

If you worked on that basis though, Noel Edmonds, anyone who's been involved with GMTV and Richard Madeley would all never work again.

The Sky EPG currently says Christine Bleakley will be presenting on Monday. You would have thought someone would have spotted that and changed it. The BBC website listings just refer to 'The One Show' team.

Although the BBC Programme page also refers to Bleakley.

Its Bleakley in Radio Times as well.

Jason Manford seemed to be quite coy about it all on The Graham Norton Show the other week, simply saying he didn't really know what was going on.

The BBC really should have pulled it for a few more weeks - they've got Celebrity Masterchef which they could slot neatly into the 7pm slot for three weeks rather than airing them all over the schedules even though they still commission the show as if it runs in a fixed nightly slot.
