BBC One announces The One Show extends to an hour once a week
Plus top names to provide holiday cover over summer - Gloria Hunniford, Gethin Jones, John Sergeant and Myleene Klass are welcomed as stand-in presenters

BBC One today announces that The One Show is set to be extended.

After successfully trialling a 60-minute format of the show in May, the series, which usually runs at 30 minutes, will include an hour long show every week from September to the end of the year.

The 60-minute shows will include a raft of new features, celebrating lives, landscapes and stories from all around the UK.

BBC One also announces today that The One Show's presenters, Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles, will be taking a well-deserved fortnight's holiday in August.

The channel is delighted to be welcoming some of the country's most popular presenters to stand in during their absence.

Gloria Hunniford and Gethin Jones take the helm from Monday 17 to Friday 21 August.

They will be followed by everyone's favourite dancer John Sergeant who will join forces with Myleene Klass, from Monday 24 to Friday 28 August.

The One Show has established itself as essential early evening viewing – combining celebrity guests with topical reports from every corner of the UK.

Executive Producer of The One Show, Tessa Finch, says: "We're delighted to welcome four One Show favourites to stand in for Christine and Adrian while they're on holiday.

"The One Show has had a great summer and is gearing up for the autumn season with a brilliant line-up of stories from all around the UK and some extremely exciting projects for viewers to get involved with.

"The new hour-long programmes are a great vote of confidence from the audience and the channel. Everyone on The One Show is looking forward to the challenge.

"We'll be remaining true to The One Show's commitment to intelligent fun."

The hour-long shows will start in September 2009 and the specific day is to be confirmed.

I'm astonished at this, The One Show has developed and grown from when it first aired from Birmingham, but it's a bit of a laughing stock amongst TV Critics and many viewers. Interesting to see Myleene Klass return as a relief presenter for a week though, if you look back at the first edition of The One Show [mark 2] back in July 2007 with her and Adrian, it's a completely different format and style now! Will be interesting to see if she matches up to Bleakley.

It's no surprise. It would be a waste now if they did it on a Wednesday, so I think Friday is most likely for the hour-long edition.

And finally the hosts get a holiday - they must be the only people in TV doing a five-day week, although is The One Show always live?

Even if that's true, what's that got to do with anything? If that was a factor for whether programmes stayed on air there'd be very little left on TV!

The fact is that it's a format that works, it gets good viewing figures and ticks many boxes in terms of production quotas and genres. I do wonder whether they'll stretch it a bit too far at 5 hours a week, although the opportunity to make the most of their excellent studio guests will be good. Too often they have some major celebrity on there and spend about 3 minutes talking to him.

Did Chris Evans ever present The One Show in the end? He was meant to be filling in for Adrian at some point

It will be 3 hours per week in total.

4 30 minute shows = 2 hours

+ 1 1 hour show

= 3 hours

Me too, thought it was a bit odd so looked a bit more closely! Smile

Agreed, Wednesday always felt a bit random for me.

All they need to do now is move back to Birmingham and it would be great.

Who gets more viewers? one or Emmerdale?

One, I should think. It's better than that tripe.

At the moment The One Show is averaging around about 3.5million, with Emmerdale on roughly 6million. But last winter The One show was averaging high 4millions and low 5millions, with Emmerdale in the high 6 and sometimes low 7s. The One Shows highest rating episode was this year on the Snow Day, when it was watched by about 6.5million.

I literally laughed out loud at this. And I rarely do that.

Why would that improve it? They certainly wouldn't get the calibre of guests they get now
