I watched the two 'The Office' specials...

It has been the first time I had seen the prog and I thought it was absolutely great...

Comedy on a sort of unobvious, deeper level.

What have I been missing Exclamation Confused: Exclamation Confused: Exclamation

You have missed a lot!! if you liked this, try his latest DVD, Ricky Gervais Animals, its bloody superb!

I think there are some people out there who simply will not 'get' The Office. These sorts of people can typically be found laughing their heads off at the likes of "My Family" or "Heartbeat" on a weekend evening, or people who are naturally entertained by and enjoy the predictability of Will and Grace or Friends.

This is why it has a very high chance of being a total disaster in the US. It's very subtle humour.

Don't want to turn this into one of those f-cking annoying Guardian/Newsnight Review thing, but there's no sort of instant laughter; it's the reactions by the cast to the actions that are carried out... it's just brilliant, and if you don't get it, then frankly I think there's something wrong with you: you just don't understand human contact.

Possibly why they're on TV Forum? (ed.)

he seems to think he is SO clever and SO funny...WHEN IN FACT, HE IS A COMPLETE PLONKER and isn't funny at all.

Yeah, but that's sort of the point... he is such an idiot, such a "complete plonker", such a (to quote someone in the first series) "w-nker" that you really have to laugh.

I think you're sort of missing the fundamental point: He's funny because he's just awful, and once you get past that you begin to enjoy it.

Erm... pots, black, kettles and calling come to mind here....

We have to be careful here when expressing personal opinions. "I think it is brilliant", not "it is brilliant". Very insulting to sneer at people whose opinion differs from that of the person posting.

The Office made me cringe more than smile on the two occasions I watched it. I fully understand the subtleties and nuances, the same could be found in most offices in the UK. Give me a reality TV production team, 6 months in a large office and I'll give you 6 episodes of "comedy/ drama".

The best part of The Office is the part no one will talk about. DJ's, Smashie and Nicey were laughing at you not with you. Petty minded office bound people, particularly under educated middle managers the same applies.

"Wasn't The Office brilliant last night? There's a bloke like one of the characters at our place."

Yes, it's you!

I find Friends appauling, a lot of American sitcoms have annoying actors who overact all their lines. Fraiser can be quite funny though.

Frasier is the exception to the rule. It is the only US comedy show I find funny. I would gladly dispense with the rest.

How is it that you are able to come to terms with hypocrisy but not irony?

Eh? So you are saying that if you dont like The Orifice, then you are by extension, thick?

I think thats an incredibly silly statement to make about any television programme.

No, I'm sure he simply means that people who use jokes like, "Ricky Gayboy" and "The Orifice" might not have a subtle enough sense of humour to appreciate the series.

Orifice?

There's a joke there.

I'm just saying I find it surprising that anyone with a very basic grasp of human interaction could not laugh at it.

Nothing wrong with finding it not funny per se; sure there are some comedies you love that I hate.

Nope not jokes, just descriptions that Ricky 'Gervais' isnt as big or isnt as popular as the BBC or indeed his fans think he is.
