Seems that every man and his dog is chasing Endemol for formats at present.

ITV have a new Endemol format coming out, C5 have this Speculation, the BBC have 1 vs 100 (a big hit in Europe and a big-budget show on NBC in the States but somewhat low-key here). Seems they can do no wrong at the minute.

The seem to be the noughties version of 80's and 90's company Action Time. Whatever happened to Action Time???

They got swallowed up by Carlton, the last thing they made that ISTR is Catchphrase, and they had something to do with You've Been Framed aswell.

The almighty of gameshow formats now is FremantleMedia/Talkback Thames, they seem to own most of the formats.

Mostly through their acquisition of Mark Goodson productions, who were the 50s-70s US kings of the gameshow.

Yes, Fremantle own (among other things) the old Todman-Goodson catalogue, and seem intent on exploiting as many as possible by licensing them as DVD games. Still waiting for a "The Name's The Same" DVD, mind.

I think this quiz is actually called "Speculation" and looks set to be shown in primetime (rather than early evening).

Les Dennis joins Five in "Speculation", a brand new, primetime, weekday game show made by Endemol company Initial. Contestants pit their wits against each other to secure the big money prize.

It was in my local newpaper saying it was called the grid...

Channel 4 certainly gave Deal or No Deal a decent build-up before launch. Surely I can't have been the only person to have seen the bus-shelter adverts?

I don't think Deal or No Deal was a "surprise" hit, given how successful it had been around the world. Except Germany.

It was a "surprise" hit in UK, in the sense that it wasn't plugged to death before it aired (like the Weakest Link wasn't). You usually tell if something is sh**e if it's plastered on billboards all over the country Laughing

Was it really? I actually saw no adverts for it at all anywhere, other than one during Countdown for it.

This is probably just me.

And over in Germany, I notice another attempt has been made at trying to get people to watch it, by using the same music/graphics and visual gimicks (deal stopper on the podium/The banker in shadow etc) as in use on the NBC version...

India began looking similarly to the Spanish (which is a bit like ours, except Spanish and more comic), changed to the Dutch style and finally had a go at doing it the US way before deciding that Indians didn't "get" the show. And all within an impressive six months or so and three hosts, one of whom left after the first batch of 30 were filmed.

It irritates me to see countries modelling their version on the US show, which is hugely charmless generally.

Totally agree. I really can't work out why the US version is so popular; it's completely hollow, with a forgettable host, cliched use of dolly-birds holding the cases, and a banker who seems to use a predictable formula for working out how much money to offer each time, and is always completely fair (unlike the Brit one who can be a complete a*se at times lol, which is a major part of what makes our one work). The only thing it has going for it is the big money, and even that's starting to get a little tired now, after all it's "only" a million dollars.

Having said that, NBC's version of 1 vs 100 is really pretty good. Much better than the bland BBC version.
