As far as I know, neither ITV or the BBC want UK Gold on Freeview because it would be too much competition.

I don't see why the BBC don't want it - they indirectly own a large part of it. As I've said before, UK Gold is still seen as something of a killer must have channel. If it was on Freeview, it would attract countless new people to DTT. Since the beeb have a vested interest in seeing it succeed, taking a 'we want Freeview to be succesful - as long as it's through our own domestic channels' line is being very short sighted.

Really, I do believe that a big name pay TV channel is desparately needed to give Freeview some serious appeal (and I'm sorry, but channels like FTN and UK BrightIdeas give it none), and UK Gold is the only one which can feasibly make an appearance.

There is a reason why it's considered 'too strong competition' - because there's bugger all on there, which is always going to hold back the potential of Freeview.

Well I totally agree with you there, but IIRC that's why the BBC and ITV don't want it there.

Incidentally, I think it's time the EPG was renumbered slightly, getting rid of the gaps. (For example) TeleG on Ch13 in Scotland is not available in the rest of the UK. Ch13 should be filled with another of Freeview's channels and TeleG (the 'extra' channel) should go at the end of the list, in this case 23 as the other channels would shift up.

It'd be nice if Plus TV* and CNN launched on Freeview...

CNN?! That would be a waste of bandwidth with all the news we have on Freeview! I know it's nice to have different viewpoints, but we've already got BBC News, ITV News SKY News and News Multiscreens!

That's not the issue at all though, UK Gold is a subscription channel, it makes money by advertising and selling subscriptions.... it can't do that on DTT any more and that's why it is no longer on DTT

...but Paytv channels make relatively little money on subscriptions, hence they show adverts also.

OK, but still it would be nice for Granada Plus to launch anyway, if not CNN.

If that was the case they wouldn't have subscriptions as all.

Marky Boy my friend! Where have you been?

Good to have you back (is it for good this time?)

Lee - as a journalist I'm surprised you don't know!

Sorry, having a bit of a dumb moment. I realise what he means, however I wrote the sentence that way round for emphasis.

And, James, if I wanted to write the sentence as you suggested, I would have put a "that" in it:

"It's unlikely that UK Gold will ever be on Freeview" Twisted Evil

Actually, substitute "be" with "appear".

I guess I spend more time thinking and editing my work, than I do when I post on here.

Edit: Look what you made me do; I've edited this post a total of five times so far...
