So what was the verdict yesterday? I only flicked on and off last night, watched a bit pre-match, went to the pub, went to my mates, and had it on in the background. ITV or BBC?
Pre-match ITV were showing full coverage of the closing ceremony with Clive commentating, and then Nelly Furtado singing - while the BBC were in the studio. For a while I thought maybe the closing ceremony ITV were showing was recorded, as I didn't think the BBC would miss out on it. However you could hear it in the background when Wrighty and co were speaking. I found it a strange decision that the BBC didn't show any/much of it - all the promo for Euro 2004 was "the beautiful game", a festival of football, flair and passion etc - yet they didn't even bother with the closing event. Anyhow, I stayed with ITV - they had their quick break before the match as usual - but there was a nice shot of Clive and Andy in the commentary box for a while before the game... Ho-hum.
Mate picked me up, to the pub we went - showing BBC, didn't hear much as it was noisy, but bar the commentary, I gather not much is different anyway betwene the channels. Maybe they inserted some of their own shots here and there.
From the pub, back to my mates pad for the start of the second half. We went in the lounge, and it was on some music channel, so he picked up the remote and instinctively flicked on to Sky channel 103, rather than 101. I was going to ask him why, but then I didn't want to bog myself down with psychological "why did you choose that channel" questions at the time.
When Greece won, Clive Tyldsley sounded surprisingly downbeat - don't know why. Maybe he was gutted as he didn't like to see Ronaldo cry - him being a United fan and all that...
After we finished our shots, down to the pub below his flat, and they had match coverage on ITV, but when the ads came on, they switched to BBC - who were doing more punditry...
Would have loved to see Des sign off though but by that time we were in the taxi ready to hit Bournemouth!
So, what was the verdict? Personally, I can't make an opinion, and I would probably say ITV in that I like the way they do their football, however I can't really comment - I didn't see enough of it. I do though think that for both channels, the standard of broadcasing has been great and does put other national broadcasters to shame. Apart from the jingoism, which I feel many people on here were pissed off with, presentation-wise it's been top stuff. I think ITV are gaining ground on the BBC now, however the adverts will always be a decisive factor for many. Won't be surprised to read in the Media Guardian today if the BBC outgunned ITV.
My prediction.... BBC 7.9m ITV 3.8m
Any more for any more?

From MediaGuardian:
The doyen of sports presenters, Des Lynam, bowed out of his last major tournament on a disappointing note last night, with the vast majority of viewers favouring BBC1's Euro 2004 final coverage and just over 3 million watching the old smoothie's swan song on ITV1.
BBC1's coverage of Greece's miraculous victory over hosts Portugal was hosted by Gary Lineker - who stepped into Lynam's shoes when he defected from the BBC to ITV five years ago - and attracted nearly 11 million viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.
