The Chase | Beat the Chasers

New Chaser tipped to debut Tue 20th Oct

The new Chaser has been confirmed tonight as a former contestant Darragh Ennis. He did get £9k in his individual cash builder but then the team decreased the pot, so IMO he's not a contestant of particular note. Guess though if he's impressed elsewhere in the quizzing community being on the show shouldn't disqualify him.

Also it has been confirmed new spin off Beat the Chasers will begin on April 27th and be stripped across the week at 9pm. Basically the format sees individual contestants take on up to five Chasers. They do a slightly tweaked cash builder (basically answer up to 5 consecutive questions correct), then get increasing offers based on how many Chasers they're willing to play against.

This sounds very much like the format of Eggheads to me.
Guess who's big in the back time!

Not really. On Eggheads, you take on one Egghead at a time, and the winners of each round take on each other as teams at the end, which could be 5 v 1, 4 v 2, or 3 v 3. In this show, contestants choose how many Chasers to take on and you're always alone.

Yes, it’s basically a challenger vs a team of Chasers rather than a team of challengers vs a single Chaser. So in that respect it’s just a reverse of the concept of The Chase and is no more like the concept of Eggheads than the Chase is anyway. Also the mechanics of this new game read as differently to Eggheads as The Chase does to Eggheads.

A format with all the Chasers long over due and the head to head works pretty well, but the cash builder a bit laboured compared to the main show.

I think the graphics let the show down a bit too - the studio and intro looks great, but the on screen graphics feel quite cheap.

Yeah, I would've expected them to just use the same graphics as The Chase does for the questions, and the same font for everything else. Instead, they've picked a standard font you'll find in Microsoft Windows?

Last contestant was on Series 1 of the Chase and in the 2003 Mastermind semi-final.

Not a spoiler - it was on the show. Not a fan of them carrying over a contestant.

As on the main show the offers are all over the place and not always relevant to performance. Usually though the 3 or 4 Chaser offer seems to be the best when you consider risk v reward, although I'm not sure the format really gives much advantage to a team of 5 Chasers over 3/4 - the time is the bigger factor.

I liked everything about it. It gave breathing time to get to know the contestants, the game is different but was simple to grasp after the first contestant. Did they mention if there is a maximum cash builder?

The set was beautiful; the transition of screens and lights so fluidly from blue to red when throwing over to the chasers in particular pleased my eye.

I like the idea of it being stripped over the week and the cliffhanger at the end is a great way of keeping viewers.

Watching now on +1, pretty good so far. Didn’t realise it was on each night this week.

Was it always intended to be a prime time show? I suppose the audience suggests it was, but was wondering if it was rescheduled to fill out the prime time schedule?

I really liked it, and felt like a nice change from regular episodes of The Chase.

I agree the cash builder round is slightly weak, but it gives us the viewers a chance to get to know and go assess the players chances, whilst also adding to the play along value.

The biggest points are it isn’t padded out, creates up to 4 Final Chase style endgames per show and it’s been really well casted.

Also I guess having the different style of cash builder makes it possible to sell to different international broadcasters, if the one who airs The Chase doesn’t want it, they can stick a different name on and sell to someone else, without The Chase broadcaster complaining.
