The original Grange Hill theme was back - and yes it really was the original and not a new recording. The credit was for "Alan Hawkshaw, KPM Music" - the first time I think a music library has ever been credited.

Is it sacrilege to say I actually perferred the 90s version?
Guess it's my age. Anyway, a nice touch to have the old tune back for the show's swan song.
Phil certainly wanted to make the point with that "Format © Phil Redmond" on top of the other credits he had, didn't he!

It's a close call, but I'd have to agree, and for the same reason - as good as the original is, the 90s music just edges it out for me personally, due to the recollection through my earlier years; such is nostalgia. Both superb pieces though, no doubt.

I second that. Maybe its because it was my era. It just is GH for me.

Well SMart is returning for a new series & it looks like it will be keeping its last format where it was on for an hour. >SMart returns

It's clearly an age thing - in my opinion the original is by far the best. The 1990 version was much too bland in comparison - in fact its introduction roughly coincides with when I stopped watching it.

I remember it sounding quite fresh and modern at the time, but really dated now, especially the buhbuhbuhboom synth drum bits. I remember reading about a year ago that it was still used (if edited down) which really surprised me, given that the Byker Grove theme tune got about a million remixes. Can't find the opening titles I remember on there though, which I remember being black and white for some reason (maybe because it was the mid-90s when black and white was the trendy thing)
I kinda remember them both at the same time because I used to watch repeats of the old 70s/80s episodes that CBBC used to show on a Sunday in the mid-90s, so both have nostalgia for me although the 90s one quite a bit more.

The later Grange Hill theme is easier to play on the keyboad in the key of C I know that much.
