I think it lost it's way ages ago. It never reports real news, like shootings, instead it's all the latest news on global warming. Before anyone says they've never done so, I remember a few years ago when such stories were reported in a tactful way.

Newsround changed it's "target audience" from 8-12 year-olds down to 7-11 year-olds in August last year -- as discussed in these two very good blog posts from the programme's editor:

The news at nine
Covering distressing news for children

That would explain why the tone of Newsround's narrative has become more patronising of late, then.

Note how whenever there's a story about anything on Newsround that may be classed as 'bad news', a link will inevitably appear next to it on the website saying 'It's OK to be upset by the news'. The page itself seems to be again very patronising.

God who wrote that - the CBeebies people?

Although in fairness this page seems to be the victim of an age in which we send the counsellors into school at every given opportunity. Two pupil deaths occurred during my time at secondary school (1987 and 1991) but we just had to talk it out among ourselves. Not even that nowadays and they'd send someone in.

As Prince Philip once said, we didn't have people asking the soldiers "are you alright?" every five minutes when slugging it out in the trenches!

Its a bit Sam & Mark overload on Extra, its a good thing. Interested to see what they are going to do about TMi being at TVC, will it make that much of a difference, we'll find out on saturday.

As for the new studio, it is definately better than CSO, I'm still sure that oucho is Dave Chapman, whoever it is though is working well. Ed seems to be doing a great job, and a wise idea to give him someone to play off, but not too much.
The thing with the new studio is that they've gone the oposite way to the CSO, where they did have graphics flying everywhere, things are now props, the only graphics are the ones telling you what's next on the screen in the background, that you can't really make out anyway!

But I'd say that's quite a bad analogy - many soldiers were shot for cowardice when they were, in fact, suffering from shell-shock. But I get your point - we would never have got anywhere if people had been pulled out of the trench every fifteen seconds to be told 'it's OK to be upset when you see someone die'.

Shooting soldiers for cowardice is the other extreme. But conscription is flawed - the army is no place for people who don't want to be there.

The teen service seems to be one of the BBC's most closely guarded secrets. All I know is that Andy Parfitt will be its controller, but I suspect that's already common knowledge here.
