Five is part of the big five main terrestrial channels and, as such, doesn't need to strive so much for brand recognition. People will tune in, accidentally or otherwise, regardless.

CBBC is one of many kids channels. The market is a lot more fierce, and CBBC doesn't enjoy the priviledged position in the EPG that Five has. They have to reinforce the brand so that kids recognise it and continue to make the effort to tune back in.

Then isn't the place to do that BETWEEN the programmes? It's not as if they can't find out for themselves at the press of a button what they are watching.

The programmes should sell the channel, not logos which interfere with them.

You're forgetting, it's a kids channel. They don't always have an opportunity to show idents inbetween, especially when it's a Live studio. Personally that reasonably transparent DOG wouldn't stop kids watching it, most recognise it's there but don't make a big deal.

You don't seem to have a problem with Pages from Ceefax having a big BBC logo in the top corner.

No, this new logo is a few hours old. True, the channel is 5 years, but under different identities. Perhaps 5 felt it right to remove their dog, but I don't think CBBC should have done so.

I don't see the problem with a DOG, if anything, I'd rather all channels had one than not any!

DOG's make channels look more professional in my opinion, and I dont see what the fuss is about, I've read these forums for ages before I've joined and there's always arguments over the topic of their existence...

Anyway, on topic, I love the new CBBC logo, idents etc. and they're much better than the outdated 'bug' logo Cool

On another note, is CBBC staying on until 9PM now, or was that just a rumour?

I was only able to have a quick look this morning, and at first sight, as DOGs go, this one didn't seem too bad, it's fairly small and transparent. But it's the way it animates every few seconds that is extremely irritating and totally unnecessary (I know DOGs are irritating and unnecessary full stop!) and has the effect of continually drawing your attention back to it. Good thing I don't normally watch the channel anyway.

When five dropped their dog in the rebrand, did they not specially introduce one for their childrens strand instead anyway? I recall seeing a 'milkshake' dog at some point, but then I've not watched it in forever.

Personally I'd much rather live with a dog on CBBC if they'd drop the widescreen cropping on old programmes, but I don't expect that's going to be happening any time soon. Laughing

I can accept that today's generations are accepting DOGs on TV channels simply because they have known nothing but and if any of them don't like it they won't know how to complain.

The problem is the UK TV industry's obsession with placing brightly-coloured logos in the top-left hand corner of the screen - the official line is that position is chosen because it is least likely to interfere with the programme action, but you don't need a psychology degree to work out the real reason for top left is because for most people the human eye scans from left to right and so the DOG is the first thing it'll see.

Only from you...the BBC graphic is part of the page design and, as you know, does not appear on every single page.

If kids are used to them, and don't have a problem with them, then - what's the problem?!

Wrong. The eye only scans left to right when reading text. When looking at an image, the eye scans about in all directions.

Well I guess that makes me boss-eyed then... Rolling Eyes

If a DOG was at the bottom of the screen, it would (in most cases) be below the main action. Being at the top, the reverse usually applies. Which makes it a distraction from what you are trying to watch.
