Huge U-turn there, though I think it's definitely a good move. CBBC worked well in the past when it was aimed at children but also teenagers. It will be interesting to see how they brand the teen offering post seven o' clock -many teens now wouldn't think about tuning into CBBC as it is definitely seen as being for primary school children!

Well presumably this is to counterbalance the loss of the teen-centric BBC Switch brand that had hived off teens from CBBC? Now BBC Switch has been cancelled, CBBC re-gains teens in their remit?

I didn't know BBC Switch had been axed - it was a poorly thought-out idea however and I think most teens don't even know it exists! I think CBBC would need a rebrand if it's to attract a teen audience after 7 though, and given the channel's recent success I think this would be something the BBC would be reluctant to do.

I also agree with Brekkie - depending on what type of teen programmes these are it might be better to put them on BBC Three at 7. It seems more logical to direct teens to BBC Three and these viewers may then stay with the channel as they become older so increasing BBC Three's audience? Most programmes on BBC Three at 7 are repeats anyway - Doctor Who, Total Wipeout etc... Teen programming could slot here reasonably well.

"CBBC on Three" anyone?

Much like the old "CBBC on BBC Choice" from the early days of digital TV, long before Freeview came along.

It was less than a year before.

With regards to CBBC Hours extension, according to this article published in March this year, back when they decided they wanted to get rid of 6 Music:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8545020.stm

The proposal was to reduce entertainment and comedy on BBC Four and extend CBBC finishing time until 9pm.

That being said, however, the BBC Trust initial report on BBC Strategy Review / Initial conclusions states, with regards to BBC Three:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/assets/files/pdf/review_report_research/strategic_review/interim_conclusions.pdf posted:
Page 30:

The Executive proposes no major changes to BBC Three in this strategy review but stresses the channel’s importance in engaging younger audiences with bold and challenging programming. We recently reviewed BBC Three in depth and endorse this view. Our review found that the channel has become an important part of the BBC’s television portfolio, both in terms of its reach to younger audiences with public service programming and its willingness to innovate and take creative risks across all genres.

The same report says children's content should be an editorial priority. The above quote would basically seem to suggest BBC Three isn't going to change its start-time any time soon regardless of what happens with the CBBC Channel.

Realistically a 12hr children's channel is out of date compared to the rest of the Sky EPG, where the likes of Cartoon Network and Boomerang run 24hrs a day, Disney Channel runs 18hrs a day, as does Nickelodeon. A 14hr CBBC day would probably justify its presence in the market, and they've talked about it long enough and I think it will happen. Yes there will be an issue about what'll happen on Freeview but we had the same debate about the bandwidth when BBC Parliament went full-screen.

Considering CBBC stands for 'Children's' BBC, I can understand why teenagers might not tune in. Although, I know a few that do.

There's just been a technical hitch in the middle of Newsround on BBC1 - cut to black, then this animation for a few minutes:

Then just before they got back on track - or at least back into the middle of a VT - we were treated to a quick shot of some bloke wandering aimlessly about the studio Laughing

TMi are recruiting TMi-ers on the CBBC website - looks like the new series will start on Friday 10th September.

I'm pleased TMi has done so well and is now into its fifth series - it certainly encompasses the ideas and themes which made programmes such as Live & Kicking so popular.
