The Bill has had many great episodes in the past but the storylines that stand out for me of all time have to be..

- June Ackland's house fire (1993)
- Beech on the Run (1997)
- Jim Carver's battle with alcohol (2000)
- The bust up between Meadows and Chandler (2003)
- The live episodes (2003 / 5)

All of these (with the exception of Meadows and Chandler) I think were shown at 9pm.. so perhaps The Bill may bring out some dramatic stuff again but not if they go over the same ideas i.e. Sun Hill blowing up.. Rolling Eyes

I personally liked when they set the building on fire. I prefer when one of the actors is killed of then just leaving which is more common in recent times. It makes it more exciting

It was exciting at the time, and maybe ok as a one off, but for a drama like The Bill it couldn't go on being so soapy forever. Ratings were up and down, whereas now they're a bit lower but at least they're consistent. Soap fans are so shallow so The Bill is probably better off moving to a more grown up slot and securing its future this way.

For goodness sake InventThamesValley2, don't be such a drama queen. You have no idea how pathetic your last post was about how poor little you is going to stop watching the bill because of HD!! Pull your self together!!

On a lighter note, the in and out of break bumpers need revamping. The titles and theme tunes are okay-ish ofr now.

Well this is all looking very posh. Not used to the 'filmic' at the moment, but time will tell as always.

Having never really watched The Bill before I might give it a go now...watching it in HD and it looks glorious.

You'd really watch just for the HD? Laughing

I'm superficial like that! Smile

It's worth giving it a go, there's a lack of good quality TV on at 8pm on a Wednesday..

You've missed the point of InventThamesValley2's post altogether. He did not say he was going
to stop watching The Bill because of HD, but because they've now adopted the fake film effect.

I have to agree with InventThamesValley2's comment ... why switch to HD production, then add
a gratuitous flickery artificial filmic effect in post-production? It's like taking two steps forward,
and several steps back. The fake filmic effect is spreading like a disease in the TV industry just
because a few coked-up executive idiots with more money than braincells think it looks cool!

I hope this sentance doesn't get you in trouble with any legal regals.

After emailing the duty desk to enquire why they were shooting on progressive HD for that horrid filmic effect I got this reply:-

"Thank you for your email regarding ‘The Bill’ and its new shooting format.

As someone without an HD Television, we can confirm that the new production looks excellent on SD sets. As you may be aware, after 25 years the production is moving to a new timeslot of 2100 and this is an ideal opportunity to make some changes. ‘The Bill’ has never been a "soap" and like most Drama Series, it is now shot on progressive HD. This is because to shoot interlaced, (full resolution video) is too unkind to our sets and actors.

We can reassure you that the new show looks even better and we will welcome your further comments.

Once again many thanks for taking the trouble to contact ITV with your feedback.

Regards

So, looks like it's all down to money again!

They're changing the theme tune:

Quote:
Talkback Thames head of drama and The Bill executive producer Johnathan Young outlined an overhaul that will see the show cut down on dialogue, introduce incidental music and change its theme tune.

He said: “We want the new theme music to get the audience to concentrate a bit more and focus. It will be something that slows you down a bit and prepares you for something a bit more emotional.”

(although I suspect they're just remixing it - surely they won't change it all together!).

It would be very wrong to change the theme all together and no doubt if they did the old one would return soon enough due to complaints anyway.

Anyway, found this... Laughing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uAo2rqWB08
