To be fair they were quick to sign it up for one of their biggest ever contracts. Isn't it on until 2010 now or something because of a deal that was done a few years back?

I like The Bill too. I've watched it for quite a few years now. It does seem to be under-rated by many. ITV1 seem to think little of it as it's always being shuffled around to make way for other things (such as football - baahh!!)

Possibly so, but I don't recall it being mentioned. Although it can't do any harm to have such a long standing agreement with Freemantle/RTL when you are negotiating the "smash & grab" of Neighbours does it?

Stuart,
Check this out:
In March 2004 ITV took the unprecedented step of commissioning 480 new episodes, taking it to at least 2010.

Didn't Jeff Stewart appear in the pilot, but in voice only (over the radio)? I recall reading somewhere that
the character had a different surname, but was called Reg? Or is my memory playing tricks on me?
On a similar subject, the character of Frank Burnside was originally called Tommy Burnside, in early episodes of the show.
EDIT: One small typo corrected

Beech is in prison IIRC! They did a spin-off of Burnside a few years ago, but it didn't take off with audiences AIUI.
I believe when Grade took the helm of ITV, it was rumoured he was considering selling The Bill to Five-- obviously not the case ^ He would've been foolish to get rid of it, it still gets reasonable viewing figures.
I loved it when The Bill won a national TV award a couple of years ago, its first ever I think!

Nope, Beech got away. Again. I'm sure we'll see him again one day. Hopefully soon.

When he was first on the run it was Maggie yes. Since that though he's been in Australia and was last seen with someone called Frankie I think...

The "Beech On The Run" special was unmissable TV at the time wasn't it. That and Jim Carver's alcholism.
