A move that will extend the reach of TG4 to Irish speakers in the North has been welcomed.

SDLP Irish Language Spokesperson Dominic Bradley today welcomed the news that TG4 will begin broadcasting from Belfast in the spring.

A proposed international agreement between the British and Irish governments will enable the acclaimed station to broadcast from an analogue transmitter on Divis mountain, which overlooks Belfast, enabling all parts of the city and most of Northern Ireland to receive TG4 on standard television sets.

The station will then become available to the people in the North, including 167,000 Irish speakers.

Mr Bradley said: "This move is welcome, but it is long overdue considering it was a commitment made by both governments in the Good Friday Agreement.

"It is not purely a matter of Irish-language programming. TG4 provides unique coverage of cultural affairs loosely associated with the language and has proved highly innovative in many aspects of its programming.

Its popularity at all levels from music to sport shows that it has itself become a vibrant part of Irish culture," he said.

Quite why they've been allowed to broadcast on analogue is beyond me, given that using the TX site for another digital multiplex would allow another 5 or 6 TV channels, not just one. Could be used for RTE should they want it.

A colleague has also pointed out that we get crap Channel 5 reception in eastern parts of NI due to the fact that we were told there was no channel availability on Divis, and the channel they had to use from Black Mountain (37) is the same as that used by Cambret Hill in Dumfries and Galloway, resulting in co-channel interference along the coasts.

Will have to read the article... there has been talk of this for a while, but I find it strange it would be so soon.

What will be the legal basis? Will new legislation be required? What about TG4's imports? It broadcasts Nip/Tuck for example, will C4 object?

And what about the tatty films?

I'm afraid that, in my opinion anyway, like so many things here, the fact that it's happening will please (and annoy) more people than providing any tangible benefit or satisfying genuine demand.

They should revert back to their original name, TnaG. TG4? We already have a fourth channel here y'know! Laughing

TG4 from Divis has been on the cards for a while. However, like you, I am somewhat surprised at the suggestion that the service will be carried on analogue. IIRC, the original intention was to offer TG4 as a digital service from Divis, with the ability to add RTE ONE and RTE TWO at a later date.

Incidentally, AFAIK, RTE ONE, RTE TWO and TG4 on DSAT for NI viewers is still on the cards at some point in the next few months.

Yep marksi, Don Anderson was on Talkback in Ormeau Avenue about 2 -3 months ago saying he was at some broadcasting do that morning where TG4 coming on Divis was the hot topic of conversation. He gave the impression he thought that it was likely to come. Quite a few papers then picked it up - the Sunday Times and Belfast Telgrpah have run with the story.

Thought it would be DTT myself - would be very surpsied if they find a slot for it because of the poor C5 signal - yes I have two aerials diplexed (Cambret Hill signal and Divis - and guess what? appalling C5)

If the rumours about TG4 are true, I just hope it doesn't lead to more political antagonising...

But I'm sure the communities who want TG4 will welcome a service from Divis, and perhaps their added service to viewers in the North will be reflected in their programmes - although from the few times I've seen it, TG4 is quite inclusive of the North; in terms of its news coverage anyway.

I'd love to think RTE will get the go-ahead for D-SAT, but I'm sure the age old problem of series rights, especially considering that RTE shows some US series and Home & Away ahead of the UK, will raise its head before a definite decision is made.

Thinking about it, if TG4 went on DTT from Divis, would they decide to slot in it on Channel 8, where S4C is in Wales?

Have had a read of the article and it mentions that it will indeed be an analogue terrestrial broadcast, with NTL Broadcast being the ones who will be providing it.

A Spring start date is mentioned, and the DFA and NIO are apparently due to sign the agreement in the near future.

Mention is also made of the rights negotiations TG4 and RTE are involved in to get their channels on Sky Digital in the North.

The ironic thing of course, is that TG4 is the Republic's third channel, not its fourth. It was on air a whole two years before TV3...

From what I hear, it's going to be low power, and low down the mast, so don't expect anything near the level of coverage that the 4 terrestrials from Divis have.

Great news for the Irish speakers in Belfast, 17th March the launch date then.

And even moreso for the literally (estimated) scores of people who communicate in the language on a daily basis as opposed to the odd 'a chara' or 'slan'.

As I can barely get C5 due to higher ground in the way, I suspect my TG4 picture will be better from my existing RTE aerial.
