To be fair, CIN relies also on the regional input from other BBC regions, and although I didn't watch text santa, mum said there wasn't regional input. So, it's two different approaches, and both were successful.

Discussed by myself on this forum many moons ago was the 27 hour long ITV Telethons. We won't see that sort of thing again, but this sort of thing, along the lines of the 1980 and 1985 Thames Telethons is not so long winded, and still entertains.

It's also worth mentioning that CIN is the charity, and it then distributes the money, wheras on text santa ITV are distributing the money to charities.

Yes, Text Santa was more an entertainment programme that raises money for charity. It had opening titles and end credits which is unlike a telethon.

They went to great lengths to remind viewers that any donations were passed onto the charities as soon as Text Santa receives them. CiN is a charity in its own right which basically gives grants to other charities.

According to DS (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/news/a540038/itv-charity-fundraiser-text-santa-leads-friday-night-ratings.html) it got 4.8 million viewers. It was a good show, watched it all and I donated!

Which isn't bad considering it was 'Mad Friday' when most work Christmas parties & outings take place.

ITV[1] are all about soaps and [downmarket] game shows. What do you suggest they do next year? A News at Ten Text Santa Special?

I think you'll find they did that at 5pm yesterday.
