It's great that ITV are doing Text Santa, and it's great that it raises money for good causes. Equally I think there needs to be a recognition that CiN know what actually gets people to donate money.

Indeed going by the ratings(just over 4m) and the donations it's clear to me that Text Santa is struggling to break into the public's consciousness.

A special edition of Tipping Point aired at 4pm.

Ben Shephard presented, with his 4 contestants from GMB. Susanna, Charlotte, Andi and Richard.

Charlotte won £10k and the others totals made £13k for text santa charities.

Odd since normal celebrity editions have the prize as £20k.

And a studio audience!

I think part of the problem is the name itself. Text Santa doesn't really signal charity, helping others or raising money for good causes to me in the same way that "Stand Up To Cancer" or "Children in Need" so. Both of them instantly tell you what they are about - I'm not sure Text Santa does. It strikes me more as a title for a heart-warming Surprise Surprise or Hearts of Gold type show, where kid's wishes are fulfilled.

It may be seen as more watchable, but it doesn't seem to have the fundraising power of CiN, Sport Relief or Comic Relief.

CiN raised more than £30m this year.

I've always been under the impression that the on-the-night total on Children in Need includes any amount announced on the night. If that's true, I do wonder what the difference between Text Santa and Children in Need is once that is taken into account..

Not sure but last year's CIN final total when all donations were taken into account was over 20m more than the on the night total. (50m). Text Santa added about 1m to their total.

Yep - that's why I compared the on-the-night totals rather than the full totals. However the CiN on-the-night total does, to be fair, include a lot of the corporate stuff from companies that work with CiN to fund raise, it isn't just public donations.

However, in comparison, The One Show raised £2.3m on their own for CiN with their Team Rickshaw this year - which compares pretty favourably - given that the appeals were only part of a normal show, not a show specifically geared to raise money, and only on for a short period each night for a week.

So does Text Santa now. Morrisons, Vodafone and others are included in the total.

I agree very impressive total from The One show.

An event that has so much promotion outside of the appeal night is bound to raise more money.
.

Stand up to Cancer definitely had far less promotion and raised nearly 15m on the night. Nearly double the previous total.
The total last night includes the profits from the phone calls on I'm a celebrity get me out of here, Philip's 24 hour marathon and nearly daily appeals/items on This Morning and Lorraine.

Stand Up To Cancer has the significant advantage of being a front-end for Cancer Research UK. Considering the massive support that Cancer Research already get, I would imagine word of mouth and social media had a big part to play in that total.

Stand Up To Cancer's name is the biggest advantage of all - it's the one cause I can think of that's pretty much universally rallied behind.

Text Santa definitely needs something to help promotion, however. A stronger bit of novelty tat or a clearer mascot, perhaps?

Did they sell the hats this year - didn't notice them in Asda as they were last year. Donation wise they're definately missing a trick not continuing into the early hours once people are back from the pubs - though holding it on "Mad Friday" in the first place is a bit foolish.

You wouldn't have seen them in Asda as Morrisons has been the main sponsor of Text Santa for two years now and the hats are being sold there.

The other difference with Text Santa and the likes of CiN is, in my opinion, when it is on. Nearing Christmas, no one really has spare cash even with it only be £5/£10 to donate and everyone is saving and buying for Christmas.

Text Santa doesn't raise as much but it does raise something and that something goes to good causes which I do think makes it worthwhile.

Quite the opposite, the majority of Charity donations each year is made in the weeks running up to Christmas. People are at their most generous at Christmas.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

I only saw a small bit of text santa, and mum and myself weren't keen on the office party thing, and especially Jimmy Carr pouring the Gin into the Punch. It was a good show, but mum felt that bit spoilt it.
