Funny how Who Wants to Be a Millionaire uses a standard mobile number. Even more strange is that it's an 07797 which is infact a Channel Islands dialling code. A Jersey mobile phone prefix to be precise

Not that strange, Jersey Telecom aren't going to use up the 999,999 phone numbers with a 07797 prefix. Why not sell them off

True. But since it's overseas, i'm sure there would be all sorts of extra costing issues. Plus Jersey Telecom is the worst telephone company in the known world. In my opinion of course Razz

Not in the world of telecoms it's not - otherwise all Jersey numbers would have a 00 prefix if you dialled from the mainland - which you don't need.

Fair point, but the point i was making is that it's a lot more expensive to phone from Jersey to the Mainland and vice versa than it is to phone from a mainland county to another mainland county, so why have they chosen a number which is going to cost them a lot more money? Unless they have made some special deal of course. Just why Jersey is what i want to know.

The saving the telecoms would make on a text message sent locally compared with one sent from one end of a country to the other are really negligible.

I used to find it strange that Crimewatch and Saturday Superstore used to share the same phone number ...

All together now ... "01 805 8055" !

Swap Shop used that number too. Why the hell do I remember that, and yet I cannot remember what I went upstairs for...

To answer the original posters question.

The short text numbers are pretty expensive to run, and often operated by third party companies and rented by TV companies, with the text processing also carried out by the company, delivering either collated results, or a feed of messages to the broadcaster.

Because the short numbers are so expensive to use, it makes sense for broadcasters to only use a few of them, sharing them between programmes. it is for this reason that the "prefx" system is used, as it shares the costs of the text number across a number of shows.

If a TV show uses a more conventional number - as BBC News do for Breakfast/News 24 - it usually means it is a lower cost operation and the number can be dedicated to a particular show.

Breakfast and News 24 are almost the same show - and the text messages can be delivered to the same system, with both the Breakfast and News 24 production teams being able to access the messages. (They are normally viewed using a web browser style interface)

Maybe we ought start off a thread on famous phone numbers/addresses used on TV/Radio. Rolling Eyes

Quick quiz now.

Who used 'B1 2JP'?

Who used '021 432 2000' ?

(People who run a certain website for a certain classic Saturday morning TV show, SHHH !)

When I was younger, virtually every BBC show was 081 811 8181 (later on 0181). Didn't they have another number?
