I don't think that's lazy at all - producing a three-hour news programme takes a lot more effort than playing out three hours of taped childrens programmes (I would imagine). The BBC are also providing some choice for viewers here - no other terrestrial channel will provide a full news service on Christmas morning.

But it wont be a full news service - nothing of note happens domestically on Christmas day, so we'll be left with reports on the nations favourite Christmas carols, and endless repeats of BBC World travel and technology programming. We should be enjoying ourselves!

Well, if nothing else it gives us luddite non-digital people an extra chance to admire the sparkly new News 24 studio!

Well you'd still get that if they showed it on BBC2, like they've done for the last 3 years.

Showing Breakfast for 3 hours on BBC1 (or in reality still simulcasting News 24 from the previous night) and then waiting until 9am to start CBBC is probably the worst christmas morning schedule since records began.

Also there's a place for newsreaders having banter with christmas hats etc and that's really on Christmas Eve

Meanwhile, ITV1 are starting Christmas Day at 4.25am with CITV and then GMTV

If you really think this is the worst Christmas morning schedules ever, what about in the 80's when BBC1 used to come on air at 9.00am with Play School followed by umpteen Carol Services and Religious Services and in 1982 a Christmas Day army inspection Parade from a nominated barracks. ITV came on air in the early 80's at 9.25am and BBC2 sometimes never began broadcasting until 2.00pm. What did we moan about then? Seems now we are all too spoilt and make too many demands.

I take it the majority of that post is Andrew's?? Methinks somebody should've clicked the 'preview post' button.

Steviewizzywick, even in the early 1980s, even though it was an endless stream of children's programmes, I think BBC1 started on Christmas morning around 6.00-6.30 a.m. I certainly never recall them ever starting as late as 9.00!

Christy, to solve this argument, why not go over to Telly Years you will see that on some of the schedules they did not start until as late as 8:40am! Only around 1985 did they start earlier...

I have copies of old Christmas TV Times since 1992. BBC1 started at 7.00am until 11am every morninog with CBBC up until 1995 when it started earlier at 6.00am. I notice until 2000 that every Christmas BBC News was only shown for 10 minutes before CBBC started on BBC1 every morning.
These schedules were great I thought, with BBC2 showing great early morning movies up until 11.00am most mornings which were always a treat to wake up too.

I collect copies of old Radio Times and have EVERY Christmas edition from 1976 onwards, and in 1980 BBC1 came on air at 8.55am with the Children's programme WATCH. Morning Worship followed The Pink Panther Show and the movie THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM was at 11.05.

In 1981 the channel launched at 8.40am with STAR OVER BETHLEHEM followed by Rolf at Christmas then Morning Worship at 10.30am.
1982 started with the Pink Panther Show at 8.40am followed by CAROLS FROM BUCKFEST at 9.00am, a CHRISTMAS ARMY PARADE at 9.45am then Christmas Morning Service at 10.45am. 1983 was even worse when The Christmas Raccoons came on air at 8.35am followed by CAROLS FROM NEWBY HALL at 9.00, Away in a Manger at 9.50 then Christmas Morning Service at 10.20am. Play School launched Christmas Day Programmes in 1984 followed by Busker's Christmas Story at 9.00am then Aled Jones in Born In Bethlehem at 9.15 and then yet another Christmas Morning Service at 10.05. 1984 also unveiled the very first LATE LATE CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST SHOW WITH NOEL EDMONDS, live from the then called Telecom Tower. 1985 started at 8.35 with Play School, Muppet Babies, Knock! Knock!, and at 9.35 the Religious Programme called THIS IS THE DAY. Things were better in 85 as at 10.05 The Movie THE GNOME MOBILE was scheduled followed by Roland Rat at 11.30 and Noel Edmonds at 11.55. It was in 1986 when an 8.00am start began. Yep, you've guessed it, PLAY SCHOOL!
Children's BBC hrealded in it's modern format in 1987 and on Christmas Day 1987, between 7.00am and 8.30 was Children's BBC! Songs of Praise followed then at 9.00 Noel Edmonds Part 1 then Morning Worship and then Noel Edmonds Part 2. Hope this settles the argument!

I think ITV1's performance this christmas is probably the best in years, a good rival for once with BBC1.

I especially like the way that they are premiering the grinch in prime time on boxing day.

World Idol could get viewers, though people may see the scheduled repeat on boxing day afternoon, and think I can watch that there, etc.

I yself will be recording both channels as I have more fun family times at christmas, rather than watching the tv. Its usually on in the background though!

A bit off topic, but can anyone tell me exactly when House of Cards is to be shown on BBC Four over christmas.

I have it on video, but it has numerous cuts in it, and until the DVD's get released in region 2 I cannot see the complete version anywhere except on TV.

Wonderful, I shall enjoy that!!!
The House of Cards Trilogy is THE BEST drama series the BBC have made. With Charles II second best for music.

Oh please let them release a soundtrack!!!
