I don't think that's lazy at all - producing a three-hour news programme takes a lot more effort than playing out three hours of taped childrens programmes (I would imagine). The BBC are also providing some choice for viewers here - no other terrestrial channel will provide a full news service on Christmas morning.

But it wont be a full news service - nothing of note happens domestically on Christmas day, so we'll be left with reports on the nations favourite Christmas carols, and endless repeats of BBC World travel and technology programming. We should be enjoying ourselves!

Well, if nothing else it gives us luddite non-digital people an extra chance to admire the sparkly new News 24 studio!

I'll agree that there are many who like to see Breakfast in the mornings and there are many who don't. But is it really fair to viewers for the BBC to show 3 straight hours of news coverage every morning at Christmas.
Looking back at schedules over the past 5 years over Christmas, news never used to be covered this much on BBC1 or on BBC2. I know this is because News 24 wasn't around back then, but why waste scheduling time over Christmas to accomodate simultainious news broadcasts.
It is the same with Weekend 24 on BBC2 (discussed in an earlier thread).
If the BBC want to show news coverage, why not just show 30 minutes worth or 1 hour, we would still be getting the latest news information and would prove just as effective I'm sure as if it were on for 3 hours.

In addition to all the above...

Friday 2nd January there's a full regional slot at 23:00:
London, Granada, Yorkshire, Tyne Tees, Anglia, Meridian, Border, Channel: Crime Fighters
Central: Scam
West: Class Act
Westcountry: Murder Most Foul
Wales: At the Doctor's
SMG: The return of the King: The Quest Fulfilled
UTV: Tarrant on TV

Wales are opting out with Moving Day on Monday 22, Tues 23, Mon 29 in place of Monkey Business, 17:30-18:00, and at 10:30 on Jan 2nd instead of Celebrity Reality Bites.

Yorkshire won't be doing Calendar at 18:00 on Tuesday 23, instead showing Jane's Year.

UTV: opt out Tuesday 23rd at 19:30-20:00 showing The Long Hard Road, a docu about local buses, instead of Airline. Opt out 17:00-18:00 Mon 29 and Tues 30 for more School Chior of the Year, also cutting UTV Live at 6 to 5 mins, filling the remainign 25 with the Planet's Funniest Animals on both days (and on Jan 2nd). Opt out to show Father of the Bride an hour earlier than everyone else at 15:50 on New Year's Eve, and yet more School Chior follows it at 17:45. New Year's Day they opt out of Everything Must Go (1h) at 12:55 to show A New Year and Family Fortunes.
There's also the odd "Home" slotted int he early hours.

Scottish, Grampian and Border Scotland are doing their own thing on New Year's Eve night:
21:00 The Steamie, 22:30 Making Track, 23:00 ITV News (as Network), 23:10 A Capital New Year '04, 0:15 Hebs Live and Loud, 1:15 Nash Bridges, 2:10 rejoins network.
On new years day SMG won't show All Dogs Go To Heaven II, instead 9:25 Faith in the Future, 9:35 It Shouldn't Happen to a Children's TV Presenter, 10:35 Planet's Funniest Animals.
Jan 2nd cutting local news short like UTV, filling with New You've Been Framed. Then later on Jan 2nd they will opt out of A Touch of Frost (2h) to show It Shouldn't Happen on a Reality TV show, and There's been a Murder (a look back at 20 years of Taggart).
They will also replace some early hours programming with extended Nightscreen and Weir's Way.

Channel's News Review 2003 takes up the 2nd half of the regional news slot on Mon 29, Tues 30.

Apologies for the stuff other people said that I duplicated.

Thanks for that info Lee, the shops in my area are useless, not one of them has the Xmas TV guides out yet even though TV Quick was meant to go on sale yesterday according to the 13-19th issue

I don't mean to offend there in my last post, but this is one area in the BBC schedules that I feel doesn't give viewers choice. For those who don't have Digital it probably seems very fair, but for Digital viewers BBC2 for example on a Saturday morning is a waste of scheduling time.
I wonder what will happen when the annalgue signal switches off.

I haven't been and looked if they're available round here yet. No doubt they'll have had to reinforce their shelves as they have to carry two different regioanl variations of each TV guide. I don't really need one yet anyway.

Maybe there was a problem with the listings for Wales or something... there are still many gaps in the DigiGuide schedules, mostly in the nations and on radio channels.

Well I had a look when I went to the supermarket and they werent out, maybe when they take away the issues for 6-12th December on Monday/Tuesday they will put the Xmas guides out, they probabaly dont have the room for 3 different editions of each tv guide.

Inside Soap goes on sale on Friday with a double issue for Christmas, and the December issue of All About Soap goes on sale on Thursday.

Well you'd still get that if they showed it on BBC2, like they've done for the last 3 years.

Showing Breakfast for 3 hours on BBC1 (or in reality still simulcasting News 24 from the previous night) and then waiting until 9am to start CBBC is probably the worst christmas morning schedule since records began.

Also there's a place for newsreaders having banter with christmas hats etc and that's really on Christmas Eve

Meanwhile, ITV1 are starting Christmas Day at 4.25am with CITV and then GMTV offering non stop children's entertainment until around 10am!

CiTV is usually good on a Christmas Day, isn't it? With feature length animated films etc. It certainly beats 3 hrs of news and factual programming.

On the topic of CITV, on boxing day the RT says CiTV is only 5 minutes long (9.25-9.30am). I don't think this is a mistake, as the programmes after are in the normal text size, but the next 3 are all Kids TV (The 9.30 Programme is "The last polar bears") and It's interesting CITV is only on for 5 minutes and then followed by a programme which clearly should also be part of it. Rolling Eyes .

Back to the BBC scheduling of Breakfast for a moment. Perhaps this is an attempt by the BBC to acknowledge that in today's multi-cultural society, not everyone celebrates Christmas.

I expect in a few years time, we may have a "Press Red" for Christmas programming channel, whilst BBC One continues with usual programming in an attempt to be politically correct and recognise that not all cultures celebrate Christmas.

Maybe this is the first move towards that.

Somebody better tell Bill Turnbull to take off that Christmas hat then!
