11 Paul McGann - useless US TV Network idea of a real British Institution - although most of the production did grow up with thw show!!!
10 William Hartnell (maybe the original but I never liked him! - possibly too cantancerous)
9 Christopher Eccleston (nice actor and good usage for the return of the show but definitely not the best!)
8 Colin Baker (nice interpretation but very awkward in the role - especially during The Trial Of A Timelord series)
7 Peter Cushing - a far better interpretation of the Dr than BIll Hartnell
6 Patrick Troughton (from repeat showings)
5 Peter Davison
4 David Tennant
3 Sylvester McCoy - some VERY intellectual stories (e.g. Ghost Light, The Curse Of Fenric just to name 2!) just let down by poor production values (Oh and too many stupid enemies - The Candyman Laughing )
2 Tom Baker - the one I grew up with
and 1 Jon Pertwee (after seeing his repeats - never saw his original run)

I have only seen Ecclestone & Tennant and think both played the part well, however Ecclestone , as good an actor as he is, was too moody for the part.

Tennant has a good range of emotions & is excellent as the doctor

I can't comment on the rest as I have never seen them, although of clips I've seen Baker would definately be the doctor I would watch if I was watching classic doctor who.

I didn't grow up with the old Doctor Who's but I am glad I watched them, the series as it is now makes more sense to me than my sister who didn't really understand K9 and the emphasis the Cyberman had.

Watching the older ones is now dated incredibly as you'd expect it to be, with rocks looking like plastic and such, but it's still good to watch.... I'd like to see a new episode with Davros in, he hasn't made an appearance yet... Tom Baker's doctor could have killed him!

oh is everyone posting their favourites? oh me next me next!!!

lol

11: Bill Hartnell (The Original You Might Say) Different era, different culture, too early for me.

10: Sylvester McCoy - Propped up a dying horse, and was holding the car keys when it crashed.

9: Colin Baker - Funny, dark, but too clownish and had the 2nd worst opening theme.

8: David Tennant - not seen all of season two but I'm not sure about him yet

7: Peter Cushing - the films are an easier-on-the-eye introduction to the Doctor Who universe

6: Paul McGann - so much potential, so little airtime

5: Chris Ecclestone - see Paul McGann - too much tortured soul too

4: Peter Davison - Young, cool, everything the Doctor shouldn't be... perfect for the ostracised Thatcher generation

3: Tom Baker - Perfect doctor, but even perfection gets boring

2: Patrick Troughton - Simply magic, a wonderful little character

1: Jon Pertwee - THE GENTLEMAN DOCTOR... funny, smart and above all classy.

Special mention to Rowan Atkinson who did a stunning Doctor in Comic Relief.

The same magazine's readers voted Sylvester McCoy as the best Doctor in 1989.

I think Tom baker gets it because he was the longest at it 74 -82 all after him only lasted 2 years.

Not that I want to play the nerd card, but it's a bit ironic that he didn't speak that line Wink

I find it amusing that Tom Baker's television tenure is always officially stated as "197 4 - 1981" (Jon Pertwee's being "1970 - 197 4 "). Tom's first full episode was broadcast on 28th Dec 1974 - so he only just qualifies as being within that year, so it's sort of misleading, IMHO.

And before you say that Tom's appearance in the regeneration scene at the end of Pertwee's final episode gives Tom a firmer claim to 1974... Given that Peter Davison is officially stated as "198 2 - 1984", then obviously the initial regeneration appearances aren't counted, otherwise Peter would be stated as starting in 198 1 !

I am that rarest of all creatures - someone's whose favourite Dr Who has always been... Colin Baker!

For two extra points, who did?

Answer : William Hurndell, playing the role in the 1983 anniversary special "The Five Doctors"

ahh! But which copy of The Five Doctors do you have?????

The original version or the enhanced CGI version (although the enhancement are very mediocre!!!)?

Sadly speaking I've got the original video feature-length version and the DVD version which has the two versions!

Unless they've done some really good CGI, it doesn't affect the answer to the question Wink

There was the original broadcast version, then the VHS version with new effects, then the DVD version with even newer effects. I can't remember what else is on the DVD, but that's the one I've got.
