Personally I think there has been a lack of decent comedy or sitcoms in recent years, and far too much focus on drama. TV is more than drama.

I agree with that very much, a British Friends would have definitely worked.

Police Drama's, whether procedural or something more gritty with a sinister twist, always seem to fair quite well. Doesn't matter if it is a all year round show or not, although I do find that all of the current shorter run police drama's are if such a high quality that they could become all year rounders.

Now, that's interesting I didn't think of Happy Valley as primarily a police drama,

As for comedy, I feel the studio sitcom is a relic of the 70s. Although it seems to work for 'off the wall' style things such as Miranda. Boomers doesn't quite work for some reason, I enjoyed the Coogan/Brydon The Trip series. Comedy built into drama works very well though, such as Last Tango in Halifax , and The Club ?

Yes, three sitcoms! One that was never memorable but somehow plodded along for ten years, and one so memorable that you can't even remember the title. I'll give you 'Not Going Out' but even that hasn't exactly had an impact.

There have been loads of sitcoms in recent years but the different is that theres been very few big mainstream BBC1 and ITV.

Some of the best sitcoms of recent years have been on BBC3 and Sky One/Atlantic have had a fair few too (if little watched). One of the biggest sitcom successes of recent years was an E4 commission

Better examples would be: Miranda, The Inbetweeners, Mrs Brown's Boys, The IT Crowd, Him & Her, Cuckoo, Episodes, The Trip

I think there have been some good sitcoms recently. Miranda and Outnumbered are/were watched by almost everyone I know and I love both of them.

At the moment, there are some great comedies for younger people. I love Cuckoo, Siblings, The Mindy Project, New Girl. These are all on at the moment. Of course, these are nothing compared to the likes of Fawlty Towers or Only Fools, but then again, nothing ever has been.

There is always great comedy on the BBC or Channel 4. America produces some good stuff too (like New Girl and The Mindy Project)

I think there are lots of good sitcoms.

I don't really have a problem with the amount of drama on TV. At the moment, I am really enjoying 'In The Club' - its so well written.

I think we are in a great era for TV. Just look at things like Sherlock. I genuinely think that it is one of the best programs ever made.

From a presentation point of view, this is the golden era. So much more thought is put in to sets and graphics. And from a current affairs point of view, this is the golden era. From a drama point of view, this is the golden era. For documentaries, this is as good as it has ever been.

Now in the 70s there were some great sitcoms. But there were also some really racist ones too!

As far as this comedy discussion is concerned, it is a matter of opinion and taste.

I really don't think that TV quality has declined.
