Out of interest, why was the House Party cancelled that week?

An IRA bomb scare caused the show to be cancelled that week.

A bomb threat that massively disrupted preparations for the show during Saturday afternoon.

I think it was not long before it was due on air, rather than in the afternoon. Hence why Noel was still in the building and had to do that link live in a makeshift way

Yes, because I recall a couple of captions appeared on screen during the Christmas Presents repeat expressing their hope that Noel's House Party would follow, and I think the announcer made a similar suggestion while linking into the repeat. But seemingly they decided it wasn't possible in the end.

I remember this, when the programme started I thought it was just one of their joke beginnings, then was disappointed when it turned out they really were repeating an edition of Noel's Christmas Presents. I only stuck with it because of those captions that were appearing.

From what I remember of last time we had this discussion, if the alert happened shortly before TX and was cleared during the filler, the studio would have been ready to go and Noel would have been able to do the announcement from the normal set.

Remind me to start a House Party thread, I love talking about this. Presumably had it been ready to go later they would have done it and to hell with the rest of the schedules, because it was such a big show in those days. There was nothing else important that night (I think it was being followed by a film)and just a few weeks earlier they'd rejigged the whole Saturday night when they decided at the last minute that Casualty was unsuitable for showing before the watershed so moved it to after nine and flung on Auntie's Bloomers.

The other thing is that it wasn't Noel's Christmas Presents from the previous Christmas because they didn't do one in 1992, it was from Christmas 1991. And only 45 minutes long, hence the arrival of Tom and Jerry to fill the gap before, er, whatever was on next.

EDIT: Just looked it up and on 6th March 1993 it was followed by Short Circuit (not a premiere, the third showing I think) and a Birds of a Feather repeat, either of which could have gone for a burton.
