Where's the DG's office?

White City? Smile

Nice to see the innards of the building. Did they do the newsroom too, I can't seem to find that?

Looking in the apparatus rooms, i'm surprised at how old some of the tech in there was. And also spotted an RM computer, you know, like the type that you had at school in a beige box. Can't see how that would have ended up there. Confused

Ohhh. Didn't know he was there.

Any reason why the lights on the grid in TC1 are bagged up?
Are they keeping them in situ until 2015/16 when the studio is brought back into use?

I thought the three remaining studios were being totally gutted/refurbished and getting all new kit when they return back to making programmes again?

I think the lamps are bagged up to protect them from the dust and debris that will almost certainly circulate during building work on the site?

Not sure how much kit has been removed from TC1-3.

Elstree Film Studios is mainly kitted out with ex-TC4, 6 and 8 equipment I believe (or did BBC Elstree Studio D get TC6s?) as these are redundant.

TC5 and 7 weren't HD - so their kit is presumably being flogged, along with N6, N8 and N9s (though some has been distributed to Cardiff, Bristol etc.) I'd imagine that routers, vision mixers and monitor stacks may be mothballed, though cameras would presumably have been relocated to Elstree?

I would expect lamps, pantos etc. to stay in-situ and not be replaced. Unless they decided to go all LED, what's the point?

I think there were quite a few RM machines. After all, at the end of the day they are PCs. There aren't actually that many consistent corporate suppliers of PCs these days (HP/Compaq, Dell, Lenovo are, I guess the big 3) and RM were one of the main UK suppliers. (The BBC still had a slightly attitude to buy British or European until relatively recently)

The broom cupboard was part of the area stripped out in 1997/8 to become the DTA. I've looked, and streetcam didn't go up there, sorry.

The last time I was at TVC i had a wander up there and it's not very exciting, the suites were stripped out to offices which had been used for editing. There was no technical equipment there at all

Quote:
CCA was the hub for studios and circuits in and out of TC. It didn't run the networks, but if you were making a programme in TC1 and had an insert from a studio or ob elsewhere it'd all get connected up in cca. Some shared kit also lived in cca. The same room was also home to SatOps and a major hub for the EBU.

And if you look carefully you'll notice that there's a little bit of Scotland in there too!

He isn't, the DG's office is in Broadcasting House. And always has been, I think.

There was definitely a DG office in the minging White City building on the fifth (I think) floor because it was signposted when you came out of the lifts. Might not have been his primary one though.

I think the DG and associated management will have moved out of BH while it was redeveloped. Although when Greg Dyke was ousted he came out of the building via the side reception door

Here are some other bits of TVC some forumers might find interesting:

For many years this was a very small newsagents called Kish's. TC also had a Florists (called Auntie's Blooms), a Hairdressers and a Dry Cleaners, as well as a Costa Coffee and various other concessions (especially as the BBC's interest in providing subsidised catering waned).

Shame that they didn't do the other floors of the Spur as there's plenty of gems that way including the almost impossible to locate TC10 & 11. I wonder why they didn't do floor 7 considering that was part of the doughnut. They would have got some decent views from the front.
