Teletext and Radio Times EPG

No idea why I thought of this this morning and struggling to find info online or an archive thread but didn't at one point Teletext offer a service through the EPG on Freeview (not the Teletext TV Guide which had an LCN). Was possibly linked to Top Up TV boxes, though maybe in the Setanta era.

Even more random but I think the Radio Times took over the service when Teletext withdrew from Freeview.

I can't seem to find evidence of either so just looking for reassurance I'm not going mad. Very Happy

Yes it was called Teletext Extra and was very purple (based on the Teletext branding of the time). I remember it just appeared overnight on the old Setpal box my parents had.

Thanks. Seems to be one of those things which arrived and disappeared pretty much unnoticed

I think the Setpal box only had now and next information, as it was old even then, so it was a nice upgrade.

I managed to find a couple of references to it on the deeteetee archive, including the post below which has a link to Digital Spy stories about it, too.

I never saw it or had a set top box that supported it, though.

I had it on an old Freeview box once but it was deadly slow and didn't seem to do very much.

Was this the service that was meant to replace standard EPG's on STB's? I remember owning a Thomson DTI1000 and this was a brilliant STB until Teletext EPG came along and it slowed the box that much it was unusable.

I think so although IIRC you could opt out of it and return to the manufacturer EPG.

Anyone remember if it had anything more than just the EPG info - could you access the Teletext news service through it? In the brief info I've found there is also the suggestion editorial content from the Radio Times would appear.
